What Sam said. The most accurate reading will be from the oil in the sump. On the Mag18, the side plug would be my choice, it is protected from the drive belts and should be far enough away from getting in the way of any rotating internals (check first). Where that plug is on my 2082 I would have to lift the engine up to get the plug out and install the temperature bulb. On the Vanguard in the 1641 it looks like the plug near the oil filter should work.

Okay, just a standard oil temp gauge, or something specific? Will everything needed come in the kit?

It is just a standard mechanical, capillary tube temperature gauge, mechanical oil pressure gauge, voltmeter, mounting panel, 3 adaptors for the temp bulb, 2 oil pressure adaptor fittings, 1/8"plastic tubing. I wouldn't use the plastic tubing and I added an 1/8"npt tee in the oil pressure line to retain the idiot light(not in the kit). These are 1 1/2" diameter gauges, probably not too durable but they fit nice in the small available area. The kit does not have any wire to hook up the lights or volt meter. The gauges are removable from the panel and can be used individually if desired.

You can get the copper tubing at any Autozone or Advance. They usually stock it next to the gauges.

I've had trouble with the nylon tubing leaking at the compression fittings.

Is there any alternative to the copper that's better than the plastic but not as "rigid" as the copper? I've got an oil pressure gauge I need to get around to installing one of these days but I'm not sure how I'd want to route the tubing :bigthink:

The only other option there is as far as I know if you don't want nylon or copper is braided stainless steel line. See link below. For the price, I would just step up to an electronic gauge with a sensor.

It all depend on what the connection on the back of the gauge is, some, like the one in this kit will only accept the 1/8" nut and ferrule, most of the braided lines have NPT or AN ends. If your gauge has an NPT thread on the back then by all means go for the braided line.

Just a FYI be careful with the oil press line connections they are fragile and don't fit all that well. So far no problems with the plastic line but the connections at the gauge suck.

The 1/8 copper is a lot more flexible than you think.. it is easy to form around tight bends and doesn't kink like you would think it might... all in all its very easy to work with

I ordered a set of the 1 1/2" and 2" gauges yesterday and they showed up today.
I use refrigeration capillary tubing and then slide some 1/4" FR pneumatic tubing over the copper to protect it. So far it has worked well.

Thanks for the info guys..:beerchug:
Now, would the electronic gauge with sensor be as accurate? For me the instillation process would be much easier. Than trying to get the brass tubing all tucked away.
If there's not a BIG price difference, simple would be worth it, and no chance of oil leaks... your thoughts!
