882 Diesel "refreshing"

Well I have finally had some time to start working on the 882 this weekend. I have been collecting parts over the last week or so. I have the updated starter (current one has a bad solenoid), a new alternator and voltage regulator (Old regulator no longer working) from xtrememotorworks, and parts for the glow plug upgrade. I have not got too far, mainly just torn down and ready to lift the engine so the old starter can be removed. I bought my 882 locally from a guy that was given it as payment for doing some wok for another guy. From what I can tell it has sat a long time.

I noticed that the battery tray is very rusty, and since I had just finished my electrolysis tank (thread updated as well), I figured it was the perfect time for it to take a bath.

I think the old battery was left in there a long time and melted down.

Also If you have hub caps, maybe take them off more than once every 20 years... :Forgot:

the wheels would of been in much better shape if not for the hub caps

Hopefully I will be able to finish it up this week or next.

You've been busy, Dale! Looking forward to your updates. :beerchug:

Vince_o 09-06-2011 05:54 AM

HOLLY CRAP BATMAN!!!!!!!!!! Look at them wheels, I wonder what mine look like :crap:

Cubcrazy 09-06-2011 07:34 AM

Maybe I should take mine off too and see what's in there!:bigthink:

_DX3_ 09-06-2011 07:54 AM

Gives me second thoughts about hubcaps...

aagitch 09-06-2011 09:17 AM

Holy crap is right! Those things are horrible!

Methos 09-06-2011 09:35 AM

Thanks for the pics Dale! I'm so looking forward to this thread!

I took the one's off the parts donor 1806 a few weeks ago and there was nothing in there but a couple cob webs. wheels looked brand new behind them. Looks like it sat outside for quite a bit and little mouse made himself a big old condo in there to me.

I had more time today after work to make some progress. I got the battery tray painted, jacked up the engine and replaced the starter, along with drilling the hole in the motor mount plate, and resecured the engine to the tractor. Up next will be installing the new alt and regulator, new fuel lines, changing all the fluids, reinstalling the battery tray and then figuring something out with the throttle cable that is broken. Nothing really to take pics of.

Yamaguy 09-07-2011 10:54 PM

I found this the other day, but didn't post it up.

After I took the tunnel cover off the 882 I was inspecting the drive shaft joints and I happened to notice that the hydro input, rear joint, and fan will turn freely independent of the drive shaft. The fan is bolted to something that may be a fluid filled clutch to aid in starting. When I start the tractor the hydro does not turn till it fires up, then it spinning like normal. My question is that I thought that only the later diesels had a disconnect clutch, not the early 782D, 882.

The tractor works like it should, so nothing is broken as far as I can tell.

jrarick 09-08-2011 05:36 AM

that looks like a standard cub disconnect--same as on my 1772.
they are not fluid filled. perhaps it was added at some point.
I don't know when they first came out as a standard item on the diesels.

Matt G. 09-08-2011 08:00 AM

That's a centrifugal clutch, and was an option on the diesels until the 1572 and 1772, when I believe it was standard. My 782D has one, also.

FrankF3 09-08-2011 12:56 PM

The centrifical clutch came installed on my 1572 from the factory. I ordered my 1572 before any of them hit the dealers floor. They didn't even have literature for them yet. I believe mine was one of the first ones built as I found there was some parts incorrectly assembled on it from the factory. The centrifical clutch can be a problem if the bronze centering bearing in the rear yoke becomes worn, then the whole assembly will not run true to centerline of the shaft and be off-balance, causing a lot of vibration. I've have to replace that rear bronze bearing 3 times.
On my 782D, I do not have a centrifical disconnect clutch on it. A kit was available to add it at one time. I've been toying with the idea to remove the clutch on my 1572 and replace it with a straight shaft like on the 782D to reduce problems.

FrankF3 09-08-2011 01:51 PM

BTW - I'm going to have to pull the hubcaps off of my 782D. Thos hubcaps have been on there as long as I've owned it. Who knows if they were ever removed.

Dale, I'm not trying to hyjack your thread but I was looking at my 882 and I'm thinking someone modified the engine bracket. It looks like it was cut in the front. Is this the correct starter or is this a PO mod?

Matt G. 09-08-2011 09:23 PM

That starter looks correct; I suspect somebody cut that to make it easier to get at the lower bolt, perhaps so the engine doesn't have to be jacked up to pull the starter.

Oak 09-08-2011 09:26 PM

Thanks Matt. That makes sense because the PO pulled the starter and had it checked with the motor in place. Could I still use that bracket when I do the upgrade or will it need reworked?

Matt G. 09-08-2011 10:00 PM

You'll need to drill a hole to clear the stud for the wire from the battery, but other than that, it'll work. Search for my username and 'glow plug upgrade' or something like that, as I think I posted some details on that when I replaced the starter and glow plugs.

Yamaguy 09-08-2011 10:37 PM

I tried to make some progress today. I pulled the muffler shroud out of the E-tank and wire wheeled them and got them primed. Then my neighbor and his friend came over and I think there was beer and Jager, but I can't remember :beerchug::beerchug:

Oh well there is always tomorrow!

Yamaguy 09-11-2011 09:35 PM

I don't think the throttle cable is broken (it's definitely not frozen). It is not connected by the handle. I want to know if anyone has any close up shots of the throttle linkage under the dash. THanks

Yamaguy 09-11-2011 11:14 PM

I made some more progress today. I got the new glow plugs in (but not wired), I started to work on the c44 deck, as it is in sorry shape. When I bought it the PO said that it needed a new belt (yeah right I thought it's prob rusted solid as well).

As I start breaking it down, it looks like at least one of the pulleys are frozen, because none of them would turn.

Once I got the belt gaurd off, I found that the deck belt had jumped off of the right spindle. It jamed everything up, maybe the tensioner is not right (it was a bit stiff).

They spin so freely it is like they are brand new (becides the surface rust!). I am gonna restore the deck as well, what color paint it correct for CCC attachments? I am going to remove the blades and spindles, any tips?

ACecil 09-11-2011 11:34 PM

You've been busy, Dale. Thanks for the progress pics. :beerchug:

I had kind of stalled out on the 882 over the winter, but finally got back to it and got it running. Boy this thing is nice! I put the cat 0 from XMW and have used it to move my 20' car hauler (tongue weight about 400lbs) around the yard and it works great!! *

I thought that the whole throttle assembly was NLA, but the cables are still available through Cub. So that solved that problem. When I bought the 882 the voltage regulator was fried, I bought a new regulator/ alt combo, as I installed it the PO just cut the wires along with the connector and I had to just match the wires up by color. The only thing is that when I turned the key to run the regulator started to spark!! I quickly turned the key off and now have to figure this new problem out. I have a feeling that there may be an issue with the wiring harness and that is why the original one burned out. So for now I use it would know charging system and just put on the battery tender every three or four times the use of the top battery backup since the mower deck is not attached yet. I may look into a completely new wiring harness, but am going to investigate first. Also the new reduction starter is hanging up every 3 or 4 times I go to start it and I have to tap in it. I am going to have to warranty it out. so while my diesel cub is running and I can drive around pulling the leaf sweeper and all that I still have to figure out some big issues before it's fully functional, but it will get there.*

Also my electric fuel pump is not working, and I need a new one. Where is the best place to buy one? All the ones I can find are $150 and I would like to try and spend less if possible.
*
No pics tonight my laptop is down and I am on my iPhone.*

Oak 06-21-2012 08:37 AM

Dale, did you try an auto parts store for the pump and do you run 2 ground wires?

inspectorudy 06-21-2012 02:39 PM

What you found under the belt cover is a good reason to NOT put that thing back on your deck. Mine came with one but I have never used it for the reason of not being able to clean and see what is happening to your deck. There was probably some lawyer's reason for it in the first place but it serves no useful purpose.

mrcubcadet 06-21-2012 04:46 PM

Sounds like you've been busy! :beerchug:

I had to replace the throttle on mine, too..When the guy first delivered it, we were trying to start it in the his covered trailer. It was about 10 degrees or less, and since it had sat in there all night, the cable was frozen and we snapped it. :bash2:

That diesel has never started harder than that time.
