battery cables?

Who makes there own battery cables? If so what wire do you use? #10 or is it #8. 10 looks thin. I was even thinking going to #6.

I use #2 gage and I solder the ends on.

:IH Trusted Hand: and heat shrink tubing.

#2 wow that's heavy.I guess heavier is better. What solder do you use?

Don't remember what the solder is, something I've had for years.

Here is a link for welding cable.

General purpose flux core solder.
60%tin/40%lead
.06 diameter

Thanks. I'll see if i can find cable and ends

Sam Mac 01-24-2014 04:37 PM

Here is a link for cable ends.

You can find them at Lowes or TSC you should also be able to get cable at TSC

I put the end in the vise open end facing up, heat it with a propane torch, melt the solder in it till it full then slip the cable into the molten solder. I continue heating it till the solder has soaked into the cable. Cool it off, clean it up slip the heat shrink tube over it and heat that with a heat gun.

Do you guys still use #2 gauge to the starter also. I want to run new cables on my 149.

Calvins66Cub 01-24-2014 05:41 PM

Here is a link to wire size amperage capacity. It is a marine rated chart, but good for reference.

#2 is a little overkill for the starter wire, but I like heavy-duty.

#6 would be a minimum for starter wire, IMO.

For Electrical use, always use Flux core solder. Acid core solder (for plumbing)will corrode.

For cable, you can NEVER go too big!!

I had to run new cable when I was redoing the charging system when i had my boat. I found a welding supply house cheaper to buy any gauge wire as opposed to Lowes or Home Depot.

NIK.

Greg had it right..acid core/flux solder is for plumbing only.

Resin core/flux solder for everything else.

I found that out early on in my work life, I mistakenly used acid core on an electronic repair...that stuff etched the copper runs right off the PC board. :Duh::Duh:

It is also better to use tinned copper wire which is also the go-to stuff for use on boats.
And use wire that consists of many fine copper strands versus a few large strands.

I had a cable made a couple years ago from this site. They use top quality marine grade components. It only cost about 10.00 shipped to my door. I think I used 4 gauge with heavy duty ends and shrink tubing.
