Please help me, 1641 v-twin engine
please help me. new to working on lawn mowers, and my first cub cadet, its a 1641 with v-twin engine... issues is any one have a picture of how the brake/clutch pedal hooks up should look like??? mine is only ran to the brakes and I just don't understand how that works for a clutch if its not running to the clutch??? if Its not working the clutch then basicly my driveshaft will never stop spinning and I wont be able to stop the mower while in gear cause engine will die I think? right? I cant do anything with it right now cause the driveshaft on the end that mounts to the transmission has the teeth chewed off some how... so the drive shaft is off the tractor right now... I also need a picture of the drive shaft to make sure I put mine back on the transmission correctly haha. but another issue im having is I see videos of people being able to take the tractor out of gear with or without engine running... mine will not shift out of neautral.... I have not tried to engage pto yet cause its in the bed of my truck and it don't exactly fit so I cant let that engage the mower deck.... so can any one help me out with pictures of how the brake/clutch pedal is? and explain how to hook it up please... and pictures of the drive shaft hooked to the transmission... im pretty sure the side that hooks to engine is simple. im a good mechanic to vehicles but im dumb founded to this lawn mower... i got it for free and was already torn apart... im piecing it back together

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- please help me. my first cub and im stuck, I usualy work on vehicles.. I got this cub cadet 1641 for free... my problem is the brake pedal.. isn't it a clutch pedal also? mine is only hooked to the brake nothing else... what am I missing? take pictures.. help me out please.. also .... right now the drive shaft is bad im waiting on my replacement but it will not come out of neautral wether its running or not.. is that normal? I have not tried to engage pto cause its in the bed of my truck right now and the deck don't exactly fit haha. please help me out.. answer some questions. I really need the help.... I don't understand how it works..... it has the v-twin engine. im trying to compare it to a vehicle... so when I press the brake/clutch that should stop the driveshaft from moving also? other wise if its moving trying to spin the transmission and rear end and im trying to stop it while its in gear then the engine would die just like in a car correct? please pictures.. help me out. im so confused. this makes no since to me. OK you had the same post up in 2 areas so I combined them and deleted the other one. This is where the 1641 belongs. |

Sounds like this one is going to be interesting.
1: The 1641 is hydrostatic drive so the drive shaft spins whenever the engine is running. 2: The brake pedal also moves the hydro linkage to neutral so if the brake is down it should be in neutral. If you can post some pics of what you have we may be better able to help. This pic is the trans linkage. |
my issues
2 Attachment(s)
come to find out the shifter was my stupidity... I had the brake down haha.... sorry... so the driveshaft is myy main issues now. how does it hook back up? one end seems simple but the other end seems not as simple from pics ive seen online mine don't look the same. I don't currently have the shaft so cant take pic... I took pics og engine side and transmission side though.

the spring ull see...
the brake pedal wasn't coming back up when I got the mower and I found a random spring on the left side of tranny (while sitting on tractor facing forward its left side) I moved the spring cause it was broken and I put it back on just in a different spot.

the cub
any more help? just need the drive shaft figured out now I think... other than the pto switch engages when its in its whole... but when I take it out of the whole on dash where it mounts to... it works fine.. or it disengages.. ive never tried to engage it yet cause the mower deck is not in a safe area right now. it came with another switch but its in worse condition so wandering if some one swapped it out already.. but I don't understand why it would matter wether its in the whole or not.... but anyway the drive shaft ends are where my problem is just reassymbling the drive shaft.. needing another drive shaft.. and one end is different... they both mount with 4 bolts.. but one end has a flat plate and nuts that came with it... the other end has no nuts and no plate and it didn't have that plastic fan I see on a lot of cub pictures...

Cub Cadet 1641 V-twin, I got last week.
2 Attachment(s)
I got this cub cadet 1641 v-twin lawn mower for free =] didn't run any at all, got the engine going altho I think it needs different spark plugs than what I put in it.. but it was what I had lieing around... the engine makes a slight knocking sound while running. very slight. it came with buckets of parts.. all the side panels... ive been putting it back together... the drive shaft has teeth chewed off on one side lol. still having slight problems with reassymbly but getting there.. really need another drive shaft but don't have the cash... gonna do the worst possible thing... weld the end that's broken lol. its not ment to move anyway haha. its a tymporary fix... unless some one has a drive shaft? also need a seat mine is unhooking from the metal base. its not in the best shape. its also missing the cover over the driveshaft area... that metal or plastic cover is missing. gonna get more updated pictures... the guy said the battery was dead but when I messed with it, it was not dead lol. far from being dead.. its a good battery.

Looks like a decent machine. Sooooooo what are your questions? If you want a part, post in the wanted section. If you have a question, ask. If you need a driveshaft, check eBay or again, post in the wanted area here. Be more clear is what you want/what you are asking, and we'll all be more than happy to help you :beerchug:

well
well, I was just showing my tractor. I have another thread for whats wrong with it. I didn't want to duplicate it. but I need pics of some one with the same setup.. I need to see the drive shaft hooked up at both ends.. I think I might be missing some.. I no im missing the fan... one end has a flat plate... the other end don't.. one end has nuts on the bolts also... so I think im missing parts or just don't no how to put it on haha. I work on cars not lawn mowers. this is my first lawn mower.... first cub too.

Not a bad machine at all! Good luck with it.

Spark plug question.
I have a question.. some people yelling at me cauzse I put dodge ram 318 spark plugs in my v-twin lawn mower engine... when I compared online pictures with whats suppose to be in it the thread count was the same depending which side its turned to, its 14mm... I didn't see a problem... it runs... it does have slight knocking sound very slight but it runs... and not sure if this is from the plug or not cause this mower was recently gave to me and it had none in it... I think its fine... if any one has a dodge and one of these spark plugs can you put them together to tell me if one is longer or shorter? you go by where it mounts in the engine block down.. that's the part that may be too long or short...
|
thank you
yes that helps a lot! ty ! only thing is why does it show the driveshaft in two pieces lol? mine is one whole piece. but thank you!! I been searching for a week now! now I just need to study this well..... also do u no anything about using dodge spark plugs in this... im told I shouldn't... I thought they was the same by comparison... it runs.... dodge ram 318 engine.... but thank you, that really will help me a lot!!

I would be worried about correct heat range as well as length. You burn a hole in one or both or your pistons because of the wrong heat range plug it will be a sad day for you. I would just pony up the 5$ and buy the correct plugs for it. :bigthink:
|
1641 has a 16 HP Vanguard engine. Proper plug for it is listed as CHAMPION RC12YC Spark Plug Gapped at 0.030. I usually cross them to Auto lite or NGK. Any auto parts store should be able to get you what you need.
|
Try Cub Classics or Patton Acres for a used 1641 or 1440 drive shaft, you can click on there links at the top of the page.

Here is how the shaft goes together.

You keep saying you need another driveshaft. WHY? Is the original one missing? What's wrong with it? How about some pics of this said bad driveshaft. :bigthink: |
Dodge Ram 318 is not a type of spark plug. That is a specific engine. It can use many different spark plugs. SO, what did you put in it? The other two guys are right.

How about you put all this in one thread titled "my 1641" or something, so we aren't chasing you all over the site answering questions about the same tractor. One thread, one set of answers. Much easier. |
the shaft...
my drive shaft, at one end has the teeth chewed off.. where the piece that holds the bearings slides on.. the teeth have been rounded off so the entire bearing just slips around like butter. I also have one rubber boot ripped pretty badly.. and its missing the fan. the bearings got pretty rusty but I tried cleaning them up... this is how it came to me.
|
plugs
I put the spark plugs In it out of the 318... that's what I was trying to say when I gave all the info of the truck.
|
I took the number sam supplied as to whats suppose to be used and googled what other brands it crosses with, it gave me a long list of different ones of the same brands... the dodge ram autolite 3924 is on the list..... which is what im using in my dodge and in the cub cadet right now.... so I think that means they fit each other
|
if the cub takes rc12yc that's the exact spark plug I took out of my dodge before putting autolites in it... now im running autolite 3924.... so ethier way they are the exact same as whats called for in both engines. so I still don't see a problem. im using sparkplug-crossreference.com.......
|
well the pto switch isn't in the dash hole... and when I put it In the whole then it wont let me start the cub cadet cause it says disengage pto... I try flipping the switch and playing with it but it never works... it never does anything till I remove it from the dash and let it just dangle by the wires basicly.... how do I put my threads together or delete one? I cant find the options.... in other forums im in they like each problem to be a different thread or different posting of its own... so people searching alike problems can find it easier and it keeps from a big mess on one thread. so I was trying to keep them separated, but I can combine them if I knew how to haha.
|
Yes, they cross. It's fine. Run them. Next problem.
But my point was, I don't care what they came out of. Dodge Ram 318 doesn't tell me anything. Numbers on the plug do. Don't call a plug a "Dodge Ram Autolite 3924". Dodge Ram has nothing to do with anything. The spark plug is a Autolite 3924, that's it. No other info needed. :bash2: |
You can't combine them. Or move them. Only the moderators can. There are different sections here too. There are sections for tractor, implements, engines...... and so on. Go to the main page you will see them.
My point was, you are just starting a whole bunch of threads, not necessarily in the right section, shot gunning the problems with the machine. Start a thread on your tractor in the "CCC/MTD Cub Cadet built Tractors (GT)" on your machine. (Which is where this thread is.) If you have a specific problem that we can't answer, one of the members, or a moderator, may ask you to post the question in another section if it isn't getting answered. (Or a mod may just move it.) You are all over the board here "shot-gunning" your machine. Start at one point, and begin the repair. Don't jump from spark plugs to driveshafts, to PTO switches. Start with getting it running, then move on to driveline repair, then on to the electrical problems..... and so on.... Jumping around is confusing, and not helping you. ONE THING AT A TIME. If there is one thread, then we can read through what you have done, and don't have to chase the info all over the site. |

Second thing we need to know is. When you say you are used to working on cars, what does that mean? So we have an idea of your mechanical abilities for working on a natural aspirated engine. Third thing. Is your age. Because sometimes things get a little technical for younger folks to understand, and I prefer to know the about age of someone I'm tempting to give advice to. |
im 24 years old, i have done engine swaps in old chevy trucks many times along with transmission/torque converter in 2 wheel drive and 4x4, automatic and clutch transmissions, changed out all parts basicly on them, ive done timing, timing chains, steering components like steering arms, ball joints, etc. newer vehicle wise, i am more limited experience on, but i have worked on years upto 1997, from sensors to timing belt replacement. just a little bit of everything as people need the help on many different vehicles and many different things ive done about lil bit of everything upto 1997 years. i typicaly google everything before i do it if im hesitate on what im doing. on old chevy's ive done about everything except a total rebuild.. ive tore them apart down to bare block. ive did top end rebuild.. but never a total rebuild yet. in my home town people bring there vehicles to me often so i get stuck doing the fixes when others don't want to or cant. but i will say i no nothing about a lawn mower haha. i recently fixed a push mower by replacing the carburetor gasket, resetting the mixture screw and resetting the magneto/coil. i tend to swap out the flywheel of the push mower with my parts engine cause i broke one of the pieces off by using a one-way on it while trying to take the flywheel off to check the keyway....
|
basicly old chevy trucks i have done it all except total rebuilds of engine and tranny..... newer vehicles i have done a lot also, would take along time to say everything i have done. but its limited upto 1997 year.

OK, I merged your threads. Looks like you have a multitude of issues to deal with.
1: Drive shaft sounds like the splines (you called them teeth) are worn out on the shaft and it's slipping in the ball in the center of the CV joint. Common when they have a ripped boot and have never been greased. You mentioned that you plan to weld it together. Not sure that's a good idea but it's already junk and if your plan is just to see if it will move before buying a replacement shaft go for it. 2:Spark plugs seem to be figured out. 3: Electrical, sounds like it has some safety switch issues. The wiring should be covered in the service manual that I e-mailed to you. 4: Is your plan to fix this for your self and keep it or just to get it running and sell it? Good to see a 24 year old that isn't afraid to get his hands dirty. Keep us posted on your 1641. |
i got my drive shaft back today, and put it on. (horrible weld job) temporary just for todays test i swear to that, im scared of it lol. but anyway it ran great. i had no issues at all. the mower deck works, the deck lifts up and down. i only need a new drive shaft and the cv-joints while im at it, and i need the cover plate. i also noticed some hydraulic fluid leaking when it was in gear and sitting still, so i have a leak some where. only other problem is after i ran/drove it at full throttle for awhile it started surging up and down in rpm's and was worse at a low idle... so looks like i may need to look into that. if i kicked on the pto to mow grass it would run normal without surging but a battery light would come on... over all im happy with the outcome. just need to do some more work haha. i was curious you said it has safety switch issues cause of the pto only works when its not in the dash spot, im curious what could cause that? why would it affect it if its in the dash or not? i chased the wires a lil bit and didn't see anything wrong. but i didn't look at them much really. oh ya it does have a safety issues with the engine will start wether im on the seat or not as long as the brake is down..and when i go into reverse it does not kick off the mower deck.. i might be mistaken but i thought pto should automaticly turn off when i go into reverse? or am i suppose to do that myself? and im almost positive the seat should have a safety switch saying im sitting on it lol, but to answer what you asked i plan to keep this cub cadet, i really like it and its my first rider ive personaly owned plus im fixing it so it makes me feel better about it. i could easly buy a basic rider lawn mower already running for what im going to put into it in cash but i like what i have.
