k301 12hp in a 127

1 Attachment(s)
I have a 127 which has the voltage reg sitting directly above the muffler. A buddy pointed out that I don't have a shield to help reduce the heat on the regulator. Does anybody have a picture showing what engine tin should be on a 12hp.
Is that piece called the muffler heat shield? If you think I should have one I'll try listing in the "items wanted" section.
Thanks

I attached the best photo I could find with the shield in question. I wish my engine looked like this one.

Yes, you should have one.

It serves several functions:
Muffler brace
Heat deflector/shield over the muffler
It also directs the air coming off the motor over the muffler and out the front

Want ad, sponsors above are good options.

Thanks Jonathan.
Those are probably the exact reasons they used one when they built it.
I think I'll look for the remainder of the tin as well. I don't recall seeing the piece covering the head either.

I may have an extra heat shield out in my shed if you have not found one yet i could look

Thanks Travis.
PM me with what you find. I may need the piece for the head as well. Thanks for looking.
If you find them, could you paint them Cub Yellow for the 127 I have?:biggrin2::biggrin2::biggrin2: Forget that request....

When you find that muffler holding/heat deflector.......
You might want to weld a nice beefy flat washer over the head bolt hole nearest the carb (I think).
Then paint up pretty.

Have had most all of the ones I ever had crack and separate at that head bolt location. The shield. that is.

Don't forget about the spacer between the muffler and the shield. Also, aren't there spacers between the head and it also?

There are different heat shields for different spark plug locations.

I guess I never considered that Lew. :bigthink: I have seen some flat ones and some "eardrop" angled ones. So is that the reason those were different on the 12 hp Kohlers because I have seen both on the 123's and always assumed that they were parts that were handy when finishing up a production line.

The dog eared ones were only meant to fit on a 102,122,123 when they were produced, there is a clearance issue with the grill housing, but they work on the later models.I have a 123 with a replacement 12 in it and they bent the newer shield to get the motor in.

Lots of good suggestions here. Thanks.
I hope Travis finds one.

I think I've found all the tin I need. Thanks for your help.

That's exactly right.....the shield on my 122 cracked in that exact spot you mentioned.
