Vacationing in PA

The wife and I will be vacationing in early June to celebrate 25 years. {Not too bad of a gal to put up with me that long!} Any how, we are planning on going to Gettysburg, Hershey, Poconos, and a Jeep jamboree in Butler. Sooo for all you PA guys out there, do you have any recommendations of places to go or see? I have been there about 5 years ago with work, but didn't have much time for sight seeing, but it was beautiful country from what I saw. We might be tent camping about every other night at a state park if I can convince her the bears wont get her! Seeing some cubs on our journey would be a bonus! I will quit rambling now, so what do ya say?

Thanks in advance, Dave

Ray Weavers? Has a few Cubs for sale and some to look at. BTW that's a huge understatement.

Lancaster is a nice place to spend a day, plenty of stuff to see and do down that way. I live about 50 minutes from Butler, so you'll be coming right past me on your way there, not much to do in my area except shop for cubs.:biggrin2:

Old Skool 03-17-2015 09:38 AM

Well you wont have to worry about me buying any of the cubs around you as I wont have a way to get it home since Im in a jeep. Maybe I could have the wife drive it home? Yeah, that's not gonna happen!

While your in Gettysburg, go to the Sunset Ice Cream shop. It's right in the historic area, delicious fresh made ice cream. If your going past State College on your way to Butler, stop in at the Berkey creamery at Penn State. They have the best ice cream (we like ice cream in this house), keaney beany is my favorite and the death by chocolate will put you in chocolate overload.

Nascar will be racing in Pocono June 7. If you've never been to a race, it's not the best track to watch your first race, 2.5 mile track, backstretch is way out there. If your not going, steer clear of the track as traffic will be ridiculous.

Hershey/Lancaster is a nice area, Chocolate World at Hershey Park is free.

I recommend visiting strasburg, they have a great scenic railroad and railroad museum there!

If your around York PA you could probably take a tour of the Harley factory.
http://www.harley-davidson.com/conte...ory-tours.html

I have not done it yet but it's on my bucket list.

Old Skool 03-17-2015 06:06 PM

You guys are offering a lot of good suggestions, ice cream, chocolate, Nascar, Lancaster. Heck Sam, maybe we could do the Harley tour and you could mark that off your list.

Thanks again

If you like roller coasters they have a place called Dorney Park https://www.dorneypark.com/ that is pretty cool BTDT.

Alvy 03-17-2015 06:31 PM

It sounds like Butler was your idea, sounds awesome. Being a Jeeper that's the birthplace, always wanted to go. Please take some pics. I always enjoyed Hershey park and the Poconos, beautiful area but I haven't been in years.

Old Skool 03-17-2015 06:54 PM

Yep, didn't realize jeeps were made there. We just got our jeep { 2001 wrangler } last year, so its new to us, bone stock but we like it. The wife really likes it when she can go topless! Meaning the top of the jeep is down,{don't wanna get in trouble here.} But it sounds like it should be a lot of fun, but we wont do the muddin thing, spent too much $$$ to tear it up! More fun to watch other guys tear their stuff up.

Skip the Jeep Jamboree and go to Rousch Creek. One of my favorite spots to wheel. I own 2 Jeeps now, and have had as many as 6 at once and over 30 since 1988. Still own my first Jeep a CJ5 I bought in 1988.
Took the family on the same trip two years ago and added 2 days in Rousch for myself. :beerchug:
This place was really nice and just a few miles away. The kids and wife enjoyed it. http://www.indianechocaverns.com/

On your way to the Pocono's, if you like trains, visit Jim Thorpe, PA located on rt. 209, beautiful little town called the Alps of America. Then head up rt. 903 to the Pocono's. If you like water parks, go to Camelback Ski area on rt. 903. Then continue north on 611 to Mohegan Sun Casino, to try your luck. From there you can hop on over to Steamtown, if you like trains and train museums, located in Scranton, PA. From Jim Thorpe to Scranton is about an hours drive. Have a great trip and enjoy your visit.

Hey Sam did you hear about Knoebels Park in Elysburg, PA? Check this out, I like it here better than Dorney.

kennywood park in pittsburgh is nice, we go a few times a year to ride the vintage wooden coasters.

Rguyer04 03-18-2015 03:44 AM

I was going to say about knobels also it's the cheapest park in the state lol you only pay for what you want to do. It's free to park and free to enter and they are opening a new roller coaster this year. You might also want to look at Penns cave and wildlife park up by state collage. As well as the Ceasers resorts in the Poconos since it's your anniversary.

If you do make it to Lancaster you have to eat at millers smorgasbord, its delicious.

Old Skool 03-18-2015 05:18 PM

A boss of mine is originally from the Lancaster area, and he told me about a place called Shady Maple Smorgasbord. Looked it up and it sounds like a good place to try. You guys are killin my wife with all the ice cream and chocolate suggestions, I may not get her to leave!

EricR 03-18-2015 07:36 PM

I'v eaten at Shady Maple and will tell you if you leave that place hungry it's your own fault, lol.

This is a very true statement.

Also while in the area make sure you try funny cake, it's a cake in a pie shell with chocolate goo layer between. It's shoo fly pie's lesser know cousin, everyone gets all worked up over shoo fly pie, sfp is good, but funny cake is where it's at.

LoL no, it would be dangerous if it was. My wife and I love ice cream, we always look for fresh in-store/local made ice cream when we travel.

PA also has a grand canyon which is quite scenic it is about 6 miles out of Wellsboro PA. When I was there we took a side trip north to Corning NY and stopped by the Corning plant and saw a bunch of neat stuff and watched glass blowers do their thing.

mudpatrol1 03-21-2015 09:25 PM

out past dorney park is cabella,s which in itself is a day trip. if memory serves me correctly not far from cabellas is a garden tractor junkyard. A to Z i think

drcjv 03-22-2015 06:24 PM

Shady Maple is a must, Creamery at Penn state by far best ice cream you can find. When in Gettysburg try Hunt's Cafe they have their famous battlefield fries. And you can never go wrong with intercourse as stated before directly between Blue Ball and Paradise. I have visited all three in one day.
