A Super weekend
 

Picked up this 1872 over the weekend. And only had to travel about 15 miles to get it:beerchug:
It's a 11?? hour tractor with the 60" deck and the front remote hydraulics. PO I picked it up from didn't know much about it because it came with the farm when he bought it last year if I recall correctly.
Went to pick it up Sunday evening and once the tractor was on my trailer I didn't have room for the deck, so the PO hooked up his trailer and followed us home. Heck of a nice guy:beerchug:
So from what I can tell from looking things over fairly good is the rear end bolts are good and tight without ever being loose. Drive shaft is tight without any movement, and the fan is still intact.
Need a set of decals.....so far. Going to be taking the fenders off for a good cleaning along with a fluid and filter change.
The woman (Nancy) is pretty fired up, because this is going to be her grass cutting machine, and that means she can cut more grass with the 60" deck and leaves me with less:beerchug:

Got into checking everything out today... Boy, udder disappointment.
For starters got the tractor up on my hoist and I figured I'd check out the starter (remember my 782 with the loose starter breaking the mounting tab off the block) and guess what I found? Another starter replaced and only one nut used to attach it, so had to fiddle around getting the lower nut on. They also butchered up the tin around it getting the starter in.:bash2: some peples kids.
Noticed a pretty good oil leak behind the PTO, so figuring it was the seal, I began to take off the PTO to access it and broke two rusted studs off the field coil.....:angry: Went into town to get a seal from my dealer and proceeded to tell him about the tractor, and he was like, boy that machine sounds familiar. REALLY!!!
So come to find out the PO fed me a pretty good story.... The dealer had the tractor in his shop earlier this year. The PO brought it to him because he couldn't get it to run. It had a blown head gasket and a "huge" amount of mouse house going on. So he did what the PO wanted, cleaned out the mouse house and installed a head gasket, and got it running. But he (dealer) also told me it's got a miss, and the PO didn't want to spend anymore on it to find out what the problem is.
So that's part of the story. Then I noticed today when I got the tractor up in the air to work on, it's got oil leaks O'PLENTY!! It has a pretty good miss in the engine I didn't notice outside by the PO's house, but notice it in my shop. Hearing isn't what it used to be, especially outside. Plus at a little disadvantage when it comes to looking under it while it's got all it's feet on the ground.:bash2: Nobody's fault but my own.
So at this point I don't know what I'm going to do. Looking right now like a money pit. Might just fix what "really" needs it and punt it down the road.:bigthink: But,,,, here's my problem. I can't screw somebody either, because I don't like the feeling of getting screwed and not being kissed:biggrin2:.
Don't know...But I do have a question. Can a field coil be welded on would it mess it up? Thinking of tacking in two fine thread bolts to replace the rusted broken studs. It'll work, but don't know if welding will fry the field coil.
Sorry so long winded, just guess I wanted to vent. Now I'm going to bed with a jar of Vaseline, cause I got this burning feeling down there if you know what I MEAN!:Explode:

Sorry to hear that this deal is going bad. I think we all get screwed sooner or later in this hobby.

You can probably weld the bolts to the field coil if you do a little at a time and cool it as soon as you weld it. Maybe someone can TIG it for you. What have you got to lose?

You may want to consider doing a re-power. If you could find a 2185 with a good running CH 18 for an organ donor you could solve the engine and PTO issue all in one shot. Yep it would have the large PTO but you could just put the later big pulley on the Haban. Holler if I can help.

I just went back and looked at the pics, it doesn't look bad to me. Now I don't know what you paid for it and that is none of my business but if it's biggest problem is engine and PTO I'd seriously consider a re-power. If you want to BS about it give me a call. :beerchug:

Catching up with you. I agree the tractor doesn't look too bad. Hope you can solve some of the issues easily. I guess if you buy enough of these a, bad one may be in the mix somewhere. Don't be to hard on your self. Imagine if this guy sold it to someone who new nothing about them.

Been working on it off and on the last few days, maybe a diamond in a goats butt...could only hope.:biggrin2:

Haven't given up yet, and actually things are looking better all the time. I got the rear seal, that actually is in the front replaced. Got the two bolts replaced that I broke off on the field coil, and put on new valve cover gaskets. So now the oil leaks are gone, and the PTO works as it should.:beer2:
Pulled the carb and gave it a cleaning, and now the damn thing seems to run pretty good. Changed the engine oil and filter, installed a new fuel filter, and fuel line.
I have the tunnel cover off and noticed the lip seal on the front of the hydro is leaking so I ordered a new one today. Should be in by the end of the week, then I'm going to change the HY-TRAN and filter and go from there.
I'm really digging this tractor, and don't want to give up on it yet and punt it down the road. The more I get into it, the more potential I see:bigthink: And if a re-power is in order later, that wouldn't be the worst for what I have in it so far......

Did you check for corrosion at the plug in the wire? Common problem and will cause a misfire. :bigthink:

Lookin good Todd. Just my 2 cents, it's pretty easy to pull the engine out of the frame on those. Remove the 6 3/8" bolts under the frame along with the wiring, cables, hoses and unbolt the drive shaft and hook it to your hoist. This one had a mouse condo in it.

I know, had the engine out of my 782 a couple times. Why do I need to remove the engine?:bigthink: Everything is clear around the heads, so.....

I just find it easier to get at the starter and clean it up good. If yours is clean no need to do it. Just trying to help. :beerchug:

:Announce:Oh I see. No that's been done. In one of the earlier posts I mentioned what I needed to do. Starter tin was butchered up and only one nut on the starter, but I got that stuff squared away.
I just couldn't figure out why you were mentioning pulling the engine. What, does he like to see me go through extra work?:biggrin2:

Finally got the seal removed today, was that not a big PITA?
Picking up the new seal tomorrow, get it replaced then onto Hy-Tran and fluid change.
Also dug up a hood ornament.:beerchug:

Got the new seal in today and everything buttoned up. Couldn't look at the ratty footrest's anymore so cut a couple pieces of diamond plate and made new ones.
Even got to take it for my first ride....Pretty cool:beerchug:

Looks good! So... Question, what's the large slot on the right side of the frame for? None of my supers have it:bigthink:

I just looked at all the pics of every Super I've had and none of them have that slot. But it looks factory. Maybe Todd has some rare test tractor? :bigthink:

I did a google search and found one 1872 with it. It looks like something that was carried over from the GTs for a short time, dads 1811 and a 782 frame I have both have the slot, but the fender covers it. Why it's there I don't know, I guess to save steel:biggrin2:
