Todays pickup was good

I picked up a MTD 1641, came with a 48" deck with a seized spindle, crack on the nose, and side panes are missing the top tabs. It 940 hrs on the clock. I heard it run, but it shuts off after a few minutes, maybe a fuel shutoff on the carb. Looks to have been always stored inside.

Lew Da Cyclops Man! Nice find. :beerchug:

"And on the eighth day, Lew picked up another cyclops":biggrin2:

Way to go Lew, nice find, if you like that sorta thing:beerchug::biggrin2:

Oak 06-16-2015 05:35 AM

Looks good to me Lew. You'll have it up and running in no time.

Tankman 06-16-2015 06:49 AM

Looks great! Plan to turn the Cyclops over?

My only Cub, the 1641, is growing on me. Grandsons want to sleep in the seat too!

mudpatrol1 06-16-2015 06:56 AM

no wonder i cant find any,lew has them all

darkminion_17 06-16-2015 05:57 PM

Thanks guys.

Well it runs now, someone didn't tighten the nuts on the valve cover that supplies vacuum to the fuel pump. Tight now and some new hose and it is fine now.

There is a 5 sec delay before it turns off after turing off the key off.

Sam Mac 06-16-2015 06:11 PM

Kill wire circuit isn't working properly. it's shutting off with the fuel shut down solenoid.

mudpatrol1 06-16-2015 06:34 PM

if its a vangaurd it needs the ignition coil kill harness

darkminion_17 06-16-2015 06:55 PM

Yes it is.Is that the yellow wire connected to the shroud,or the one that goes to the coils?

Yep. :beerchug:

darkminion_17 06-16-2015 07:07 PM

That is the same that goes into the ignition switch, which I changed, then it comes out and goes to the seat switch.maybe bad.
I already cleaned the grounds on the starter solenoid (green wires)

mudpatrol1 06-16-2015 07:48 PM

its the one under the engine shroud with diodes in it. goes to both coils and then to tractor harness

This it?the small black wire.

mudpatrol1 06-16-2015 07:57 PM

it should have diodes in it,i replaced it on my vangaurd. perhaps someone made that?

mudpatrol1 06-16-2015 07:58 PM

thats the harness in question lew

darkminion_17 06-16-2015 08:04 PM

I will see if i can get the harness, glee bay may have them, gotta go new,too much involved to put this old one in and find it is forked up.

lets get the fork outta here....

Attachment 66146

Radio Shack part #276-1114
Rated at 1.5 amps/1000 volts

darkminion_17 06-17-2015 09:23 AM

Thanks Oak,
but to bad the nearest one is 23 miles away.
I saw a few on meme vay for 11.00,free shipping.

Sam Mac 06-17-2015 09:34 AM

Lew are you sure it's bad? I'm just wondering if the problem isn't someplace else in the wiring. You should be able to shut the engine off by grounding the terminal where it exits the blower housing. Do you have a copy of the 1641 wiring diagram? I have it if you need it.

darkminion_17 06-17-2015 10:29 AM

I was going to do that today, the seat switch looks like it's been messed with.

darkminion_17 06-17-2015 02:34 PM

Looks like it is time to get the motor pulled.
I will make sure, but it needs some cleaning.

FrankF3 06-17-2015 04:13 PM

When I replaced that harness some time ago, I was giving it some serious thought to splice up the harness, and extend the wires so the diodes would be accessible and replaceable without having to pull the tins off. Never did tho and though I would do that next time.

Pulled the motor and removed the shrouds.
Found out that one of the wires going to tha mags was off, starter gear needs replacement, and a slight oil leak coming from behind the flywheel.

We have the parts and time to start on it.

Thank you sir.is there an easy way to get this clip off?
The old seal spins in the bore so it will be easy to remove.

105_Tom 06-20-2015 10:24 PM

Looking good, Lew. Your work, that is. The tractor may still be ugly in your eyes when you're done, though :biggrin2:

Push the bendix in towards the starter and pry the clip off. Plan on replacing the clip when you put the new gear on, ask me how I know. This was the engine in a 1641 that I bought a from esarvey.

Mike McKown 06-21-2015 09:29 AM

Check the armature bushing in the end plate and make sure it's not worn. It if is, it will quickly shell the teeth on the new starter gear. It'll even get the ring gear on the flywheel.
