1772 Driveshaft coupler

Finally bit the bullet and picked up a splined coupler for my 1772. I was thoroughly surprised that the dealer I stopped at had it in stock. When the salesman handed it to me I was positive it didn't have as many splines as the one on my machine. I didn't have the old one with me when I stopped. He assured me that this was the correct part. He was wrong. Mine is a 9-tooth and his is a 7-tooth. Looks like I'm returning it. Hopefully he can get me the correct part for the same price. $116, bushing included. I'm actually glad it is the wrong part. Check out the casting work on the new one. Pretty crappy how none of the holes are centered properly.

Just tossing this out for you to think about. You can convert the drive shaft to the Cyclops style CV joint drive shaft. You'll need a complete drive shaft from an 1863 or 1864, a pump adapter and the engine adapter. You would also need to drill and tap the pump shaft for a 1/4-28 bolt to hold the pump adapter onto the pump shaft.

Stopped back at the dealer today. They had the right one in stock. Salesman handed me the wrong part yesterday. So I'm back in business. I'd like to do an upgrade. I've tossed around a lot of ideas. How much would I have invested in a CV swap?

I'm really interested in the CV conversion, but for now I'm gonna stick with original equipment. Probably beating a dead horse. I have all the necessary means except the parts for doing the swap, but just no time. I'd like to dump the disconnect clutch upon reinstallation. I have extra flex discs and an extra coupler. Figured maybe install the coupler in place of the clutch and add 2 extra discs with longer bolts. But can't figure a way to attach the fan. I'm sure others have done this, but can't find any pics. Good idea or bad idea?

^^^anybody? I've searched through a lot of threads and found many people that said to dump the disconnect clutch but none state how they did it.

Never did one that way but my guess is that you replace the shaft with a solid shaft like the 1872 has and use that style fan and rear coupler. You'll have to figure out the length and where the hole for the pins need to go.

This is kinda what I am thinking. This is just a mock up. Still need an idea for the fan.

Think you have too many flex discs. You can probably use the fan for an 1872.

Just to add, all this could have been avoided. I don't have any issues with using the disconnect clutch, as for I've already replaced all the brass bushings previously. Problem is, I dropped one of the clutch shoes and chipped the eyehole that holds the spring pin. I can't locate the shoe assembly anywhere and doubt it could be fixed without causing balance issues, which is kinda the whole purpose for discussion. On top of all this I'm trying to keep things cheap. I'd really like to do the CV conversion later down the road. Time and money are an issue right now. And it wouldnt bother me if I had to go through all this again when i can afford to. Thanks for all the insight and listening to me babble. |
Alright! Seven year old post revival! Im ready to do this shaft conversion. I've located a couple prospects for cv style replacements from an 1864. Would I be better off purchasing the new components from a supplier or would used be fine as far as wear and tear? I'm not too affraid to spend money on new parts. Partstree has the couplings available but not the shaft itself. Still cheaper than buying a new mower right now and my mowing size and time is now way way bigger and longer than it was back in 2015 at the time of my original post on this subject. The vibration wasn't terrible to deal with for 45 minutes or so, but now I'm mowing for about 3-4 hours straight. Eventually I plan on getting something new but waiting to get my Kubota compact paid down a bit first. Plus, I'm sending a kid to college this year and have no idea what expenses are involved in all that yet. Anyways, any input is always appreciated. Its way beyond time to get this machine running smoother! Thanks!

Yes!! Got hooked up with him last night and the wheels are already in motion! I cant wait! How are you guys drilling the input shaft? Im guessing it has to be fully removed from the transmission.

Should be measured first for O.D. to determine the center then indicated in a mill vise, preferably with a DRO for accuracy and using a spot drill.

Dave's way is the correct way.
But I don't have any fancy tools like that yet.:bash2: I drilled one of my machines input shaft's but I just used a hand drill with the pump in the machine. |

I used a right angle drill. Check with Jeff, I think he is making a pump adapter that uses the spirol pin like the OEM adapter.

I'll just throw this out there, in case you don't have the newer shaft yet. I really like the 2000 & 3000 series shafts better than the CV style and they're easy to shorten to your needs. They still use the same bolt pattern on the couplers and the cyclops style fan goes right on.

The 2 and 3000 series shafts don't work with the diesels because of the rubber engine mounts on the diesels allow the engine to move fore and aft and then the coupling with the plastic barrels comes apart. We have already tried this and had to go back to the CV stuff.

Just an update on this. I installed the shaft from Jeff, and everything is working great! Still have a slight vibration at idle that rattles the side panels and hood a bit, but nice and smooth at high rpm. This is a great upgrade and I highly recommend. The parts provided by Jeff are very well crafted and he gives you everything you need along with simple and easy installation instructions.

ive done this swap now in 3 of my machines. both of my diesels and my 2072 all have the cv style shaft from Jeff. great parts. great guy. couldn't be happier with them.
