Walbro WHG carb on my 1650
I've taken my Walbro WHG carburetor off my 1650 and plan to clean it and replace the parts that I can with a rebuild kit.
My main question is, does the main jet come out? A buddy looked at it and thinks it should, but wasn't able to get it out after trying for a few minutes. I'm a novice at this, so any other tips you can throw my way are appreciated, especially if they are specific to this carb. |

It does not come out, hopefully it is not damaged. Here is a parts picture.
|
Yes, it says WHG on the side. We didn't use enough force to cause any damage. Maybe I can post a photo.
If it doesn't come out, how do I make sure all the passages are clear? |
remove the parts that you can, welch plugs ect. and give it a good soaking. The kit will show you what you get on section 3 page 10 of the manual that is in the tech section.
|
Thanks. I took a look for the manual. No luck yet, but I will keep looking.
I know the kit I ordered (a Walbro kit, not third-party) showed one welch plug in the photo. It does look like the carb has two. |
I think I found the manual you referred to. Thanks. I see in the diagram, there is one welch plug mentioned. But on my carb, there looks to be another one next to it as well.

Be aware that if you try to remove the choke and throttle shutter screws (part #15 in the picture)
they will snap off and then you will be up Schitts Crick. |

Wow. That's a bit scary about the screws on the plates. Thanks for that tip. We actually took the screws off on the choke plate this morning. There were no lock washers, so maybe someone lost them previously. I took a look in the charts in that manual and that is the first place I found the model number other than on the carb. I didn't have any luck finding it doing internet searches. It is 4705396. Which it seems wasn't meant for my K341, but was original equipment on the K321. This manual lists it for the K321, but not K341. I'd be glad to hear any insight on that from you all.

File the screws flush with the throttle and they will come out.
|
Are you sure you have a k341? There should be 10 head bolts.

The 1650 rolled out of the Factory with a Kohler K341AQS-71221 engine in it.
That engine used a Kohler Adjustable Carb 45-053-08 -----> Repl by: 45-853-12-S |
I started doing a little disassembly to see how many headbolts there are. This is the first time I am doing any of this.
I have the motor cover moving freely, but i can’t move it out of the way. What else do I need to take apart to get a look? Obviously, I am trying to avoid taking apart more than necessary. I’d like to post a photo, but can’t seem to do it. I figured you just click on the photo icon in the bar above the response box, but nothing happens when I do that. For what it is worth, the motor cover has a sticker on it that says Kohler 16hp, but i suppose someone could have put that original cover back on a replacement motor. |
In order to access the head bolts you need to remove the top tins on the engine.
|
Thanks, Finruskw. Any advice on what to do to get a good enough look to count the headbolts?
|
Actually, after looking a some Kohler engine photos, I think the part I am talking about is not the flywheel cover. I'm talking about the sheetmetal cover that the spark plug sticks through. This would be a lot easier if I could get a photo to post.
|
That's the one you need to remove.
Why bother, It's a PITA, unless of course you need to remove the head for some reason. Just get the carb working right and see how/if it runs. |
finsruskw, the only reason I want to remove that cover is to confirm this really is a 16hp motor, not a smaller engine that someone replaced the original with.
|
There should be a Model Tag attached to the Fan Shroud. Can you find that, and what is the model on that tag ??
:bigthink: |
R Beddel, I do see a somewhat mangled tag down low on the motor, on the same side as the carburetor. I cleaned it off a bit and it says 9280312, nothing else. I don't know if that is a model number or a serial number.
|
The Model would be K341. There should be a five digit "spec" number and a "serial" number also.
|
OK, thanks. I guess that has been lost over time. The silver sticker up top, on the panel above the head is faded, but says "16HP, Kohler, The cast iron line, Long Life, ACR Automatic Compression Release, Ball Bearings, Internal Governor"
Any advice on posting photos? Photos would sure make all of this easier. |

Thanks, Roland. I was looking for something like that but came up empty. I'll see if I can resize some photos later and upload them.

The carb kit arrived. It does have two replacement welch plugs, so I'm wondering if I should replace both, or if it is a bad idea to take the one off? Let me know what you think.
Also, I have no idea what the two small brass pieces are. Can anyone tell me? |
Those look like jets that go on the bowl side of the carb, you should ask the seller which one you use.
|
I just want to say thanks to all of those who provided some advice, and I wanted to give you an update on where I am at. I soaked the carb for about 22 hours in Berryman's Chem-Dip, and it removed an astounding amount of gunk inside and out. The carb looks so much better to the eye. I took a small wire and worked it through some passages to try to clean any obstructions, but it came out clean everywhere. At this point, I decided to skip, at least for now, replacing the welch plugs. I figured it was worth a shot to see it the carb worked properly as is since it seems like all grime has been removed. If I have problems, I can always do the welch plugs later.
So, I put the carb back on and the tractor is running better than it has since I bought it a few months ago. I made some adjustments to the screws on the carb, and I may need to still do a little more, but it already sounds far better than it had. Thanks again for the advice. |
