Won't run right

My 109 won't run right, I've been doing a lot of plowing snow, and all the sudden tonight, it wont run right. I adjusted the carb, cleaned the plug, and checked the point gap, still not fixed. Anyone thinking water in the gas? I'm just going pull the carb and clean it, because its still snowing here. any other ideas?

Please elaborate on 'won't run right'...that could mean a hundred different things. Won't stay running? Runs rough? etc. We could list a bunch of stuff for you to check, but help us narrow it down a bit.

It idles, but when you pickup rpms, it bogs& almost dies. Dirty main jet?

mharrison 01-27-2011 09:36 PM

sounds like it's in the carb, probably main jet

OK I've cleaned the carb, put water remover in the gas, cleaned the plug, set the points, and it still wont run right. Ive adjusted the carb to the specs and adjusted both ways from there when it is warm. Should i get a new spark plug? I'm thinking it's somewhere in the ignition system. coil, condenser, i don't know. I'll look at it after church.

If it starts right up, no problem, I don't think you have ignition problems.

Is the governor working?? I would check that 1st.

Next I would check the fuel flow. Perhaps partially pluuged line, or tank outlet, not providing enough fuel.

I assume it isn't blowing black smoke??

Cubcrazy 01-30-2011 09:11 AM

Check the condenser.

cubcadet109 01-30-2011 01:22 PM

I think there is enough fuel flow. It backfires through the exaust so it is probally to lean right, because if it is ignition it would be through the carb. Am i correct there? thats what ive always thought. I'll pull the carb again and go through it extra good, then look at ignition stuff. How do you check the condensor? Yes, i do beleive the govenor is working. its got to be something olbious i guess if i haven't found it yet. its wierd that it happened suddenly. usually the carb just happens over time.

Before you take the carb off again, start the tractor and pull the choke a bit when it stumbles. If it clears up, you have a fuel problem. If it doesn't, it is probably something else. If it's running lean, adjust the main jet on the carb so that it runs richer.

Adjust the carb....may have to go beyond specs--just listen to the engine. If it has backfired several times or hard, then I would go ahead and replace the plug anyway as a precaution!!

If you are able, try a condenser from a known running tractor. These engines will start and idle with no condenser but fall on their face when you try to give them any throttle.

cubcadet109 01-30-2011 09:05 PM

I checked the choke yesterday, nothing. If i just unhooked the condensor, would it have the same effect as if it were bad?

darkminion_17 01-30-2011 09:22 PM

Check your coil...
It may be bad.
I had the same problem on a few cubs.
Somewhere there is a post about checking one,Most of the times the ones I replaced had the bottoms pushed out...

jeff k. 01-30-2011 11:25 PM

I had the same thing happen a wile back on my 782. I tried all the tricks, playing with carb. points etc. It would idle, but back fire and run really bad if I tried to open er up. Some one told me to try a different condenser,so I pulled one off of one of my other cubs. Started it up with a different condenser ran great. Ordered new one haven't had a prob since. :beerchug:

ok guys thanks for all the help. it turned out to be the coil. usually when my coils go bad it cuts out when its hot, but this did it right away so i wasnt leaning towards that. thanks again for all the help, it runs perfect now just in time because were supposed to get 0-18 inches of snow 25-40 mile an hour winds. no school for me hopefully

rmunro 01-31-2011 07:18 PM

Glad you have it working. Now to get mine in shape!!

darkminion_17 01-31-2011 09:01 PM

Just checking.was the coil pushed out at the bottom?

yes it was

APPALACHIAN EDGE 01-31-2011 09:47 PM

MY 0.2 cents! Might wanna go ahead & switch condensor out to as lil as they cost ! Ive found most of the time they like to hang on & put you through the mill ! They usualy dont go bad all at once ! if you have been jump starting it, Alot of times thatl burn your coil up & it will get hot & push bottom out 99% of the time, but not always! you can run it without condensor but itl eat ur points up in no time ! TIP: Always buy condensors in pairs !:beer2:
