How much compression on kt17s
I pulled the engine from my 1711 today, a kt17s to degrease and put new crank seals in. Before I pulled it I did a compression test. Both sides had 96 pounds of compression. The Kohler manual suggests that above 90 is ok. How much compression do these motors have when they are fresh? It runs good and doesn't smoke so I don't think I'm going take apart any farther than to put crank seals and check the valves and new head gaskets. What do you guys think?

Make sure you retorque the heads after getting it up to operating temp for say 10-15 minutes, or they will blow/leak.
there is no valve adjustment other than to grind the valve stems. but you can check them to see where they are @ |
I don't recall the manual listing a specific compression, only just as long as they are not below 90.

most any engine be it a chevy, ford, kohler, or any other will have 150 or better fresh. you at 96 are at the bottom end of life she will be a smoker soon

Thanks all for the replies. Once I get the heads off I'll know more on the overall condition of the motor. This was my father in laws work horse. It has 3590.2hrs and counting. This is the farthest this tractor been apart in the 12 yrs I've been around. He made sure it had its engine oil changed every spring and fall and the hydro oil and filter were changed every other spring. Maybe one of you guys could help me I.D. if the motor is the original by the #'s .
Model# KT17S Spec # 24302 Serial # 14222653 Once the heads are off then I'll be able to tell if its been bored or not. Again Thanks for the help. |
Your's is a Series II motor. The Series II starts with Spec. No. 24300.
If I am reading it right the serial number says it is a 1984 engine. |
