1440 shaft assembly broke
 

Guys,

The shaft assembly on my 1440 broke last weekend. That would be the drive lever for causing the tractor to go forward or in reverse. It is broken off right at the point where it joins the shaft assembly. I looked at a new part, at about $75.00. I am not sure where else to look - any suggestions? I was also thinking of removing the whole shaft, and having the lever welded back in place. Any advice from anyone?

Right now the Cub just sets there. Starts up, runs fine, but can't go forward or back.

But if it broke where I think it did.Which would be the rivets holding it on to the spring steel you could put more rivets in it or get some one to tack it back in place .The only problem with tacking it is if you get it to hot the spring steal will become brittle.

But what do I know.Like I said pics would help.

Yep, pictures. I realized that too late. My Cub is 265 miles away from me, and I forgot to take pictures before coming home. The part is number 703-1838 as I recall. It is identified in the parts diagrams as "cross shaft assembly." It is simply the lever sticking through the dash, you grab to push forward (up) to drive, or pull down to reverse. Right hand side of the steering wheel, lower right corner of the dash. That lever is attached by means of rivets. It broke off right above those rivets.

Best way to fix it is with a new one but you could probably weld it as long as you don't over heat the spring. Most of the time it's the rivets that fail and you can just put new rivets in or drill it out and bolt it. You can probably get a good used one from Patton or Cub Classics. :beerchug:

When I got my 1863 that lever was broke and missing. I took a piece of 3/8 rod, ground a flat place on one side, drilled the holes using the small piece of the original and started bending until I got something that would work. If you have both pieces weld it back together and use nuts and bolts to put it back on. mine had nuts and bolts when I got it. This thread contains a few photos. Lube all the linkage to reduce stress on the lever.
