Battery won't charge

Old 109 running well but the battery doesn't seem to be charging... and it's a brand new battery. Any ideas ?

Check out the Charging System. It is either the Starter/Generator, Voltage Regulator, or some wiring issue. See.... Test

Thanks Roland. I'll give it a try tonight.

New battery?? They did fill it, right? Check all of the connections also.

To Roland:
I did the continuity check, both wires are good. It took a while to figure out what wires were what as there really are no distinguishable colors. but I found out what they are using a wiring diagram I found on the internet a while ago that I just noticed was submitted by a "R. Bedell". Great diagram ! I've seen a few and yours was easiest to read and looks true. I ordered a new V/R, I'm pretty sure that's it. I don't think the S/G is bad because I put a different one on that was in working order and still was not getting a charge. I'll let you know if the new V/R works. Thanks again.
Greg: if you're reading this... it is a new battery, filled and fully charged and my connections are all good. thank you also for the input, by the way your signature quote sounds like it should go under my name.

Roland's diagrams are in our "tech" section here on the site under "Technical Library-Tractors".

Don't forget to polorize your new regulator before starting your tractor!

lynco 05-21-2014 08:38 PM

Thanks for warning me about Re-polarizing... I didn't know. I'm reading how to in the test Rouland suggested above. Am I reading it right? A short jumper between the B & G terminals on the V/R ?

DarwinsFlinch 05-21-2014 08:44 PM

Does a VR that has been completely removed from a tractor need to be re-polarized?

Shrewcub 05-21-2014 09:57 PM

It is actually the generator that is being polarized. Any time the battery, V/R, or S/G is disconnected the generator needs to be polarized.
