My Method for getting stubborn pulleys off spindles

5 Attachment(s)
Yesterday I ask for some information on removing the pulleys from the outside spindles off a 44c mower deck. I got 3 responses from J-mach, Deltacub, and darkminion17. All were good suggestions and I truly thank you for your input. But they were to naught.
So last night I went to bed with this on my mind and when I awoke this morning I had an idea. Straight to my shop even before coffee I went to work and I had them off in about an hour without any damage.
Thought I would share this on a new thread for anyone having trouble removing pulleys it worked really well for me.

First of all remove the top nut an air Impact wrench is suggested.

Then to the drill press and drill 2 - 1/4" holes one on each side of the pulley nut and tap the holes with a 1/4" tap

Then bolt your puller to the pulley and it will pop off, but it is best to use some good penetrating oil I used PB blaster and let them soak over night.

I don't know if this is the right forum to post this in but this method worked for me and I wanted to share it. Maybe it will help someone who is trying to rebuild spindles and save some$$$.

Did you remove the grease zerk that was on top of the spindle? I have done that trick for the pto basket pulley.

Not a bad idea, but I'd have had to have coffee FIRST. :biggrin2:

Yeah I removed the grease zerk, the hole is perfect to hold the puller in line.

Belive it or not it's homemade by my dad. Many years ago. I sure do miss him.
