Is there some trick to prime the hydro pump on these things?

What happened to it that it needs priming? Did you service it?

had to replace rear end do to broken case. now can't get it to prime

I have had to replace seals in a couple aluminum differentials and replace a broken case on a cast iron differential and have not had to prime the pump. An incorrect filter or a broken gerotor in the pump can cause the pump not to build pressure. Are you using a cub cadet transmission filter?
