Dash repair

:HeadScratch:I have a 1250 that I will be painting soon. The dash i belive is fiberglass which i have no experience with. The lip where the hood rest on it is broken in the corners. I have a friend who is good with fiberglass that is going to repair it. My question is about the painting process of this dash. Do i need to rough it up? Special primers? Any info will be greatly appreciated.

John you would prep the fiberglass dash just like prepping a piece of steel. Any automotive grade paint and supplies will work just fine.

I wouldn't sand blast fiberglass, just rough it up some.

Don't sandblast fiberglass parts, the sandblaster in a matter of seconds can bore a hole clear through you dash part, cause the fibergalss fibers to protrude from it (looking kind of furry). Just prep with sandpaper, if it is in good shape you could just use a scotch bright pad to give the paint a tooth to bite to.

Okay, sounds easy enough. How about old decals? Heat gun and scraper work for fibreglass too? Thanks guys :)

young enthusiast the heat gun will also be fine to use. I would not concentrate the heat in a given area for any length of time. Kind of pan it back and forth.:beerchug:

The adhesive Cub Cadet used on there decals is tough! I used a razor blade scraper to remove mine. Did one side, flipped it over, started removing the other and right towards the end, WHAM! The razor blade slipped when the decal broke and ended up cutting my left hand pretty bad! Learn from my mistake!
