Would have not thought of patching, interesting. I have not pulled
the engine yet, just waiting to come up with a strategy. I have no idea what caused it but there are lots of pieces of the block wedged behind the starter. Crazy thing is it still runs just fine. If you fill the crankcase with oil it will start right up. No smoke no issues, throttle up and down just fine. Will only run for about a minute though as it sets the low oil switch off and kills engine. It will be interesting to pull it apart and see. The only thing I can think without looking inside is that breather failed and over pressured the crankcase. But I would have thought seals and gaskets would have started leaking prior to blowing up. It has no leaks other then this big one.  Ken

Speaking of patching. That might be exactly what took place here.
Unfortunately I pushed the "plug inside while trying to pull it out. It filled this hole and did not look like the rest of the block. Never seen anything like this before. DSCN3197.jpg DSCN3201.jpg Ken
