Jonathan will really get a kick outta this-I sold an engine kit to this guy building a 389 Pontiac V8 in a GTO for one of my customers. Today he brings back one pair of main bearings, saying they don't fit, but all the others did fit fine. He told me it is a 1966 when it is actually a 1964, and figgered the wrong year model was the reason. I knew the catalogging showed all the same mains/rods etc. for 59-66.
They were the wider thrust main bearings that keep the crank from walking. ![]() And this guy is building an engine. Same guy built a "standard bore/std crank 1965 327" a few months back, I was incredulous he had found a standard bore Chevy 327. Most of those didn't survive the '70s... He brought everything back. Was actually a 57 283, bored .060 over .030/.030 on the crank, so I re-ordered and sent stuff back... One month later, he wanted it all again, and rebuilt it yet again. |

Sold 5 std rod brgs annd one .010 under rod bearing for an 806 IH this week also...

I love the folks who pull off the battery cable on new stuff to see if the alternator is charging. Sold a handful of ECM's that way.... I just use a cheap voltmeter. |

We have a customer who just bought a ford tractor that had been sitting for some time, one cylinder was full of water and all rusty and he wants to know if he can just replace that liner and piston and not worry about the other 3.we advised him against it but he did it anyway, turns out the other 3 cylinders are very low on compression and the block is cracked, the bad part is he bought it with the guys word it just needed points and he paid about $2000 more than its worth.

Buyer beware-The guy with the 806 rod bearings said it only had to drive onto the trailer.....he did buy 6 feet of emery cloth..
I swapped a free VW dune buggy years ago for a 76 Chevy C10, 350/automatic. It was a mosquito fogger, so I pulled it apart after attempting to blow it up. Had small valve head on one side, large on the other, all the ring gaps were lined up perfectly, two pistons had no skirts at all and they weren't in the pan.
