Default My Second Cub Cadet

The 124 you guys and I went through fell through? The guy was a complete ass and I wouldn't give him $5.00. But I have found one I think is even better. Not shown but included is the mower deck and a push blade. The old guy restores these and this one has been restored. 800.00 for it all?

Nice 122! Looks like it's worth $800, since it's restored and has the attachments.

I could get him to fix the decals. 800.00 is a lot of money to throw at it, but if I buy one that needs work, it will be costly? This one has all the 3 point hitch and spring assist already there and working. Is there anything else you guys can tell me about the old girl. Like what year is it and so on.

Cub Models are based on production runs and are not "year specific" but the 122 is circa 1966. It is bulletproof and if well taken care of will be around long enough to see a republican get into the white house. You paid a reasonable price based on condition and extras, you got yourself a gem my friend.

You did well - you can drop $1000 on parts pretty fast.

On the surface it looks like the major differences between the two packages are a creeper gear and a turning plow.

If the first one was truly restored, with having the engine rebuilt and done correctly, it may be the better deal between the two.

Creeper gears have a terrific cool factor and they aren't cheap, but unless you plan to till garden or throw snow, you will probably never need it and turning plows can be had for $125.00 all day long.

If you're wanting something that is ready to go that you don't have to do any major work to the engine in the tractor is what really matters. If you're not an engine builder yourself, you could easily drop another $700.00 in an engine rebuild. Pretty much anything else with a tractor can be repaired in a day or two and for a considerable amount less than an engine rebuild.

Personally, if I were going to spend that kind of money on an old garden tractor, I would choose the one that is going to give me the the longest trouble free service.

OR, you could just get both.

Don't get too hung up on spending $800+ on an "old" tractor. These things were made to last several lifetimes. Take your $800 to the Lowe's Depot and see what you can buy with it. Probably a fancy push mower. Either one of those machines looks to be worth the money. As Yosemite mentioned, it's all about the powerplants at this point. Find out if the "restored" one has had anything done to the motor, and ask about the other one as well. It could have been rebuilt in the last few years, and if done right will be a huge bonus for you.

Here is the add.
Owned this model 122 Cub Cadet since 1987 and have now upgraded to a newer tractor. Tractor starts right up and runs fine.
Features;
1. 48 inch mid-mount mower deck
2. IH front blade
3. Creeper gear
4.Implement lift
5. Brinly single plow
6. 3 speed manual transmission.
7. Original headlights
I am trying to reach him to see if any work has been done on the engine. Also, I would like to have it at 700.00. I think he will do the 7, but like you guys said, the engine is very important. I can't do a re-build and would have to send it out. What would a complete engine cost?

I talked to the guy with the 122 and attachments. The engine was completely re-built in the late 90's. He has all the receipts. I can get it for 700.00? I think I should pull the trigger on this one. He did tell me he took the front PTO off because the springs were gone and it was rattling?

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
