Grew up on those (dad bought it before he went to work for IH). The Deeres use variable speed pulley as opposed to hydrostatic. You could "slip the clutch all you wanted with no damage and no jerking because all you were doing was moving the variable speed pulley. You have a lever on the right side of the dash that served as a adjustable stop for the max speed you wanted to go in each gear. Transmission is a 4 speed, Peerless I believe, same as in some on Craftsman mowers and Zippy's Case. I don't know how well the setup worked under heavy loads but it did great for mowing grass. I think the lawn and garden dept got the idea from the ag depts. combines. I have 2 Deere combines with the same basic drive system, except you use a hydraulic cylinder the move the variable speed pulley (its about 18" in dia. and 150-200 lbs) Anyway, that's how a variable speed Deere works.
