Lets just say, hypothetically speaking that someone-lets call him my friend-did this same job on their tractor. Then this friend of mine put eeeeeeeverything back together, drove his tractor around the yard and it worked fine. Later when he was in the garage he noticed that he had forgotten to put the guide plate back unto the unterside of the shift apparatus. What would you tell him? Does he really need that shift plate, when it seems to work just fine without it? Or is it just another one of those non-essential luxury parts, like brakes?

You forgot the

If that is the part I am thinking it is, without it will allow you to put the transmission in two gears at the same time!!

That will not hurt anything as long as you also do not let the clutch out!!

Just how strong is your leg??

Yes, you need that. Without it, you'll be able to unknowingly put it in 2 gears at the same time, which will destroy the trans if you let the clutch out.

It's best to get your friend to fix his screw up before you find out about it.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
