Default Kohler vs Stens Head Gasket

I'm shopping for a head gasket for a Kohler 18 HP Magnum. According to Matt's page, I understand that many aftermarket head gaskets are of poor quality and don't have the Fire Ring as on the Kohler gasket. Stens seems to provide many aftermarket parts, and I wonder if their head gasket is of equal quality (ie has the Fire Ring) to the Kohler or just another poor quality aftermarket part?

Matt is right. But you will be fine with Stens. My 106 is all stens stuff and its held up for many years now. I like the kohler rods better, the way the rod bolts togeather.

Can you post us some pics of the eng where its leaking?

You should see the 38 hp comand pro i have in the shop now to rebuild. Its the worst Ive ever seen. The inner air filter failed and sucked dirt in and sand blasted everything! When you stick your hands in the cylinder bore theres a ridge in the bottome thats like a ski jump its so worn. It was using a qt of oil a day! Its on a stump grinder. I think the guy is going to short block it as its going to be cheapier and he will get a 2 yr warenty with the short block rather than the 30 day from us.

I put a set of Stens on a mag 18,
got them from evilpay and they are just fine after about 200 hours usage.
You do have to retorque them, and yes they do have the "fire ring" for that application.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
