Flatbedford if that is the original engine there shouldn't be balance gears in it.

Please explain this to the new guy. Are they only in later engines?

Only the later engines had ballence gears. Dave Kirk knows more about kohler k-series engines than kohler and he created the original crank ballence kit http://www.kirkengines.com/

Where is the dipstick for your engine? If it's at the top under the hood, it won't have balance gears. If it's on the side by the carb (cam gear cover), then it originally had balance gears. They moved the dipstick to the cam cover because it would interfer with the gears otherwise.

red56turbo, Do you know if Kohler used a plug in place of the old dipstick or was the casting changed?

Thanks. I am good. That must be why the dang things shakes so much at idle!

I wondered how one could tell if they were cursed with balance gears besides opening the engine. So, since my 12 HP Kohler has a dipstick on the front, right-hand side, it doesn't have them? Cool!

Clay,
I'm assuming the casting was changed. Just looked at the 169 and there was no provision for an upper dipstick. The 124 and 109 both have the upper dipsticks and it was too late to check the others in the shed. If time allows tomorrow, I'll check the 129 and 149 tomorrow.

On a side note, correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that none of the 7 or 8 horse motors ever had balance gears, only the 10+ horse motors. IIRC, when the 147 came out, they had the top dipstick with a stub dipstick to allow the owner to fill the oil from there and the bottom camcover dipstick to actually check the oil. The stub dipstick on the top allowed room for the balance gears. I may be off on these two details so someone please correct if I'm wrong.

Merry Christmas everyone!

I just picked up a 149 yesterday. It has the dipstick on the carb side. I guess I'll be going in for the balance gears. I think the engine will coming out to do some other stuff anyway.

I doubt they would have changed the casting. It's the same casting, but machined differently.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
