Kris, we had a 1211 with a 50" deck, similar machine though late '80's. If you don't let the grass grow too high the big deck is great, but it will bog down in any kind of high grass, that's a big deck to run with the 12 HP Kohler. A 44" deck will be an easier spin for your 680, but by all means get the 50" if you plan to stay on top of the mowing.
You got it free? That's just not fair, it's bad enough Clay got his for $150, free Cub Cadets are pretty hard to find! Post some pictures when you can.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester.
