Default Magnum 15 HP Convert to 18HP

I see in the cub cadet book that the 15 hp motors are downrated M18's.
Does this mean that you could easily make a 15 into an 18?
If so, what changes would be required?

Probably just the stickers on the air cleaner and flywheel shroud...

Seriously though, I checked the part numbers between the two a few years ago and couldn't find any differences, if I remember correctly.

Hey Matt,

Did some checking a little bit ago and all that I could find was someone saying that there are some changes to the carburetor.
"Probably just the stickors on the air cleaner and flywheel shroud".....too funny.
But when you go to buy them in the tractors, I am sure that there are good differences in the pricing for the hmmm bigger motor means more money. Kohler commands seem to be that way as well with only subtle differences between the 18-20 and then adding the electronic ignition to make the 20 a 22.
I'll do some more checking. Found a guy that has one of these motors and I can get it for $125.00 and figured that I can at least keep it for parts if needed for the motor that I am going to put in the 982.

Like Matt, I did a lot of checking on this. All I found different was the sticker on the air cleaner. The Kohler engine spec# is the same.

I did have a couple of long time Cub dealers tell me that they were really 18hp. They said they sold many 1541's because of the lower price. If I remember correctly the difference was $200 to $300. One even told me that he had a customer that would not buy the 1541 because he could not believe that Cub / Kohler would do such a thing.

I have around 2000 hours on my engine and it still runs pretty good. I am going to put in a Command this spring. I want to keep the 1541 running for 10 more years, so I figure a new engine now will get me there.

That is hilarious.
Well, gonna make the call and go pick up that motor today or tomorrow. Never know when I may need it and at that price who could argue.
I was never able to get a Command at a good enough price around here so the magnums will do for now until something better comes along and only if I need it.
I WILL BE SURE TO CHANGE THE STICKERS..........hee hee

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
