So....in between various other tasks, I got around to the re-assembly of the hydraulic cylinder a few days ago.

First, I installed the head's O-ring and seal
Then I lubricated them with hydro fluid and carefully fit the rod through.
Then I placed the piston in a cushioned vise, being careful to allow for rod clearance. I applied blue loc-tite to the rod threads, and screwed the rod in as tight as I could get it without dislodging the piston from the vise. Again, I used a large screwdriver in the rod eye for leverage. Excess loc-tite was wiped off, and the unit was checked for absolute cleanliness.
I installed the lubricated piston O-ring.

Then I dipped the piston into hydro fluid and CAREFULLY eased the piston into the case. There are two grooves at the head entrance where the head seal and retaining wire are fit, and the fine sanding and polishing I did previously was to make sure the edges were smooth in order to allow for smooth passage.
Then I installed the head seal and fit the head on.
I placed the case in my small pipe vise and fed the retaining wire through the window as I turned the head with a spammer wrench. The wire supplied in the kit has ends that were mushroomed from being cut with a snipper, so I filed them smooth, and under-beveled the end I used to push through, so it would not dig in to the head groove.
Finally installed the ugly, unpainted fittings, leaving the lock nuts loose for alignment after attachment to the 982.
Fortunately, I had re-assembled the engine earlier, and a quick test revealed smooth operation and no leakdown.

Piece of cake! Thanks for the help!:biggrin2.gif:

Great lesson, deputyrpa!
I have done larger cylinders also but have never seen the "wire" retainer! What a great job!

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
