I agree, if it isnt a 169 serial # youre better off keeping your other Cubs. I made the mistake on my #1 169 by not checking the engine out. Ended up getting a 14hp instead of a 16hp. Now it will take me months to find the correct engine with all the correct parts.

To know for sure if that is a 169 or not is by the serial number tag which on 169's would be on the left hand side of the frame by the clutch/neutral pedal. I don't see a tag. I also see the left hand side panel where the hour meter would be located is gone. Mufflers and air cleaners can be replaced if worn or lost. Count the headbolts and fins. Could be a 16 horse. But not being able to verify with the serial number would make it hard to prove it's a real 169 and could hurt resale in the future if you'd ever decide to sell..........
Ask to seller if he can verify the serial number or has the tag somewhere.

Under edit:
Look to see if the serial number is located on the rear end running vertically. If this is the case, run don't walk. It would be a fake 169. All 169's have the serial number tag on the left side frame. Can't tell from the pic if the tags there (painted over) or missing. Keep us posted on what ya find out.

Hi y'all,

Just wanted to thank all of you for your help. I haven't been able to get the owner to give me the tractor serial number or count headbolts yet. No detail pictures either. I'm interested in it still because of the hydraulic lift and it has part of the three point on it, but my interest is slowly waning... I don't like asking questions and not getting answers. It's a 3.5 hour drive, so I want to know what I'm getting before I spend money in gas... So, I'll let y'all know what happens. On a side note, if anyone has a 147, 149, 169, etc you might be interested in horse trading, just let me know....

Stuart

If you like it, find out the "buy it" price, you might be happy just trading dollars for it.

Hi everyone,

Just an update. I finally got the serial number. It's 2050048v51498. The motor looks like it is out of a quiet line as it has a regual starter... No starter/generator. It had headlights. The switch is still there, but the rest is gone. So is the chassis a 169?

Thanks,

Stuart

The chassis is a 169, if the serial number was on the frame by the brake pedal. The 0048 is the machine code they used to identify them. There should be more numbers at the end of that serial number though, the last 6 digits tell the month and year...im sure others will help out.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
