Default belt tension on 44 C deck

I was adjusting some things today on the old 1811 and when I got to the front mower belt adjustment I was a bit puzzled. Using the little diagram on the front of the mule drive I started adjusting the nut on the adjusting rod to try and make it match the diagram. I ended up with the nut almost all of the way in and the rod was sticking out about three inches. The adjustment notch was still at the "Needs Adjusting" position. Has anyone else had this problem and could it be a belt that is too long?

Did you try running the deck for a a little while,??

Sometimes the belt needs to "move" to show the correct gauge location.

I used this deck and belt all of last summer. During the winter I replaced the center spindle and wanted to be sure that I did not put too much strain on it with the belt too tight. I have mowed twice this year with this belt and the new spindle. I got it from Rich at Patton's and I trust him with my orders. Is there a way to measure its length off of the deck and be close enough to tell anything?
