This is the 149 I brought home Friday. Should I here a very slight snapping sound from the coil when the key is turned on? That's what I hear when I turn the key just to ON. Dust on top of the coil even jumps a little. What's up with that?

Never heard that from any of the coils good or bad. But like Duke said, its probably going bad. If it's not a Kohler coil, it will shortly anyway

If you can get the tractor into a dark area (or wait until tonight) do a visual check in the dark and watch for a spark trail outside the coil tower. A crack in the tower, or a conductive path from the inside of the tower to a ground will divert the spark away from the plug wire.
Check for a crack in the tower, clean the inside and outside of the tower to assure no oil / grease / dirt path is diverting the spark away from the plug wire. A little spritz from a water bottle onto the top of the coil may aggravate the problem and make it easier to find the "spark leak" from the tower area. Something is making it electrically easier for the spark to jump out of the coil to ground than jump across the plug gap.

I got the old girl started yesturday after noon.
Had already set the timing and changed the points. Put on a new condensor and cleaned the coil tower real good. I don't hear the snapping sound now and it starts and runs. I'm not sure what the fix was but it's running. Time to give the carb a good cleaning and maybe rebuild. Atleast I was able to see if the hydrostat and lift operate OK and they do. All the hydro linkage seems in good shape and reasonably tight. Push the the brake down and it dosen't even creep. I'm going to need a muffler as this one is blown out. I used to like LOUD . Thanks for all the help. 2012 137.jpg 2012 138.jpg

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
