I like the QL series tractors. Of course I'm biased, I've got a 1650. As best I can tell, the thing that turns off most is ISO mounts get squishy and need replaced. I don't consider this a big deal. Other than that, I feel they are a very good tractor. I like the looks of them too. They strike me as an interesting combo of new and old. They are definatly rock solid/heavy duty, but were the first Cub Cadets to have an enclosed engine compartment and electric actuated PTO.

I think your 1250 is a fine machine - keep it!

Also...

Good luck,
Bill

I have a 1250 that was not given attention as it should have. After I got it, I looked on this site and saw what areas to watch out for as trouble spots.
I just recently got it in service again after replacing those items that are common problems with these tractors. You can search this site for my posts about working on my 1250. Just look for my member name, bllwnkl.
This group of guys on here helped me out tremendously, and they will help you, too. Keep it and good luck!

I have a 1975 1450 with a 16hp kohler engine in it. I am the second generation to own it. I have had a few little problems with it but nothing serious. And nothing that you would not expect from a machine from the 70s. But it is a great tractor. The guys on this site have been very helpful with helping me get my tractor fixed and with trouble shooting

My 1250 had everything wrong with it when I got it but even still it ran and mowed. Here is the list of what it needed.

Engine rebuild, bored .010 over with all Kohler parts.
ISO mounts and cradle modification.
Gasket behind hydro pump.
Trunion repairs and springs.
New relief valves.
Muffler crutch and heat shield repairs.
Wireing and switch gremlins, chargeing problem rooted out.
Cooling fan and ragjoints.
New front tires.
New battery points plug and condenser.
Steering work includeing a nicer wheel.
New PTO deck belts.

around 1200.00 total investment, but I saved it from being tore down for parts and I hope I never need to buy a box store machine.

forgot to mention my time in hours but I love that stuff.

I've got a 1450 and found the ISO rubber engine mounts are the most likely trouble spot. I was fortunate in that the previous owner replaced them not long before I bought the 1450. I did get the crack on the aluminum exhaust box welded, and that is a common situation, and why the 'muffler crutch' was invented.

Some have mentioned the driveshaft, but I'm not sure what about it is a possible problem.

I also have two 149's and it is remarkable how much quieter is the 1450. In the long run, I think you will be happier with the 1250 than a Narrow Frame.

All of the drive shaft problems that I know of are ISO mount related.

All vintage LAGT's have their own set of issues. None are issue free. The good thing about Cubs is there are replacement parts galore, and good people on sites like this one to help you work through the issues. Where you have to be concerned about issues is with an old Simplicity. From what I can tell, there is no support group for them like there is for CC, Wheel Horse, and JD.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
