Default 1989 1050, Belt Issue

Replaced the mule drive belt with an aftermarket from NAPA, same measurement as what the book said. I cannot get enough tension on the pulley. I have it screwed all the way in and the pulley with the lever on it is touching the frame of the mule drive. What is happening is the blades spin, but when I get in thick grass they slow down to were they will not cut grass. This is the 38" deck. Just put a new deck belt on tonight but have not tried using it. Any advice?

When belts are made. they have design characteristics,ie: material, re-enforcing, angle of the bevel, width, & length to mention a few.

To match up a belt by simply emulating the length, is coming up short.

The belt cross referenced with the cc part number and is identical. My question is how do you properly adjust the belt?

You adjust the belt with the mule drive.

If the belt isn't quite as wide or the angle is different it can sink further into the pulleys and therefore be too long to work and you've maxed out the adjustment before getting it tight. If you want to use an aftermarket belt, you might need one an inch or two shorter depending on the manufacturer.

Got a shorter 1/2 belt with a length of 91" and it works great. The belt should be 5/8, but tractor supply only had a 90" or 94". Not sure if the 1/2 belt will last as long as the 5/8, I guess we will see.

Isn't there a cub dealer in your area? I've tried some belts from the auto-parts places and they don't last near as long as the original belts that are
"supposed'' to be on the tractor.
You will be buying two to one before your done, I know times are rough out here, but SPEED COST MONEY, HOW FAST YOU WANT TO GO?

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
