I got my cub1541 back from my son-in-law, and he said this past winter he was blowing snow and the engine just quit, now it wont start. I installed a new starter and it wont turn over. If you turn the engine by hand, it makes a clicking sound on the right bank and hard to turn. If you turn it by hand backwards the engine turns freely, It has a hydro static drive. Could the safety switch from the clutch cause the problem?

I think your son in law blew it up. If it's making a clank in the engine someting not right inside.

This past weekend, I charged the battery up. I installed a new starter, the engine turned over once. It seems like there's something to do with the hydrostatic drive. I am going to disconnect the drive shaft and see if the engine turns over easier. Would the oil sentry protection only send out a warning light on the dash? Also, where would I locate the brake pedal safety bypass? I know I am not giving a lot of good info. I will get the serial numbers for wiring schematic .
Thanks to everyone for the info. |

Just my 2 cents but I think you have something like a rod a gov gear broken inside the engine. Unhooking the drive shaft won't hurt because if it's not the hydro you would have to disconnect the shaft anyway to pull the engine.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
