Introduction and Starter/Generator question

Greetings:

My name is Ray, I live in Louisville, KY.

I just got my first CC and am very excited to join this forum and start learning about these tractors. The tractor I bought is an 109 but has had the motor replaced at some time with a K301. I don't know any of the history of this tractor as it had been traded a few times before I got it. It has had some neglect but I will gradually make things right, it's great to have something that is built well enough to justify bringing it back up (unlike the more recent tractors).

My question is about the S/G. I just got the tractor yesterday, it starts quickly when warm but not so quickly when cold. I know there are probably carb issues and although the PO says he changed points and condenser, I don't know if this was done properly or with the proper parts. The tractor runs OK (some smoke at start up but hopefully a different issue).

The Starter/Generator has a sticker that indicates it had been reworked in the past. It seems to be generating fine, but seems "anemic" when turning over the engine (almost like a weak battery, but the battery is new and charged).

Could this be some adjustment problem in the engine (valves, point gap, timing) or does this point directly to the starter? Are there steps I can do to isolate/troubleshoot this? Thanks, Ray

I would first go through all of your electrical connections pertaining to the starting system and check for dirty, loose connections. As far as your starting problem, you may want to check and make sure the points are set right. I'm sure others will chime in on ways to do that.

If this is the first exposure you have to an engine with a starter-generator, you may think it is turning over slower than other starter-only type engines. The s/g's don't spin the Kohlers all that fast in comparison, but remember, the compression-release will allow these engines to spin at low speeds and catch and start. As to your post, are you saying that the tractor starts quickly or slowly in regards to total cranking time, or referencing the speed of the s/g when to be slower or faster depending on the temperature of the motor? The guys are right, check all grounds and battery terminals to ensure you are getting the best connections between battery and s/g terminal.

Check the ground and all the wiring first. Look good around any places the wires could have worn through, by rubbing, or connections that go bad.
As was mentioned, these don't spin like a starter only tractor.

Welcome to another KY cub guy. Cant help much with the S/G other than to say they always seems a little slow as compared to a regular starter.

Thanks to all who replied, and so promptly! I took a jump pack and placed it right on the starter and a good ground. The starter acted exactly the same. This is the first SG I've been exposed to so I think I may have been prematurely worried. The starter doesn't spin noticeably faster when the motor is warm, it's just that the motor starts more quickly. I think I'll just go on and focus on the next issue (and there's always a next issue!)

it could be your spring is weak or broke on the c/r ,i went through that ,and replaced the spring ,
