I don't know how accurate this info is but on page 66 of "Cub Cadet: The First 45 Years" magazine it says IH production for the 582S ended with serial number 694101 in April 1981.

Wild Bill, AGitch: Looks like my conclusion is in error. In addition to Oscar's book, I have turned up an MTD company "confidential" listing that shows the 582S (IH Kind/Code: 2050596Uxxxxxx) was indeed produced by IH at least for a short run beginning about July/Aug 1980, probably for the 1981 model year with all production ending in April 1981, with a serial number range of 665001-700,000. After the sale, the IH Kind Code for the CCC made 582S apparently changed to 2050583Uxxxxxx. This same CCC produced IH model was also the then concurrent CCC yellow/white Model 580.

Way to go Stitch.....got one heck of a discussion going now!! My personal opinion.....the red ones rule from the stand point of the 982 looks like a "TRACTOR" It looks big, bulkly, powerful, it says in a deep voice "look at me, I am one heck of an impressive tractor". Heck, my wife even likes it! And that is very RARE that she likes the same things I do, especially when it comes to spending money! I just know that I am the only one around my area that has one, and I like that....no "keeping up with the Jones'" here....I am going to have something unique, no one else is going to have! Kinda pig headed I know, but that is the way I am. Nothing wrong with the yellow and white ones....just partial to red ones myself.

I have noticed one discrepancy in Oscar Will's book about 582's. It show the machine code for a IH built 582 as 582 when in fact both of my IH built 582's have the machine code 592. This is for the regular 582 and not the 582 special though.

AJ, thanks for pointing that out. I recently just aquired an IH CC 582 and have been on this forum since researching and learning about these things. One of the first things I did was checked the serial # and it reads 592 which confused me. My whole sn is 2050592U683690. I've been on the hunt for an 82 series GT and finally found one. The PO tore it all apart and left it out in the weather here in Southern Oregon. Now I'm trying to figure out what's missing. Great to read and learn from all these posts regarding the history of these awesome machines.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
