Since a few teeth are already broke off, when the gears make contact where there are missing teeth it "skips"...and that dosent allow the gears to mesh properly, which will allow them to keep breaking off. Like I said, its your tractor...but thats what happens.

Ok... Not sure what that is. The second pic looks like a broke th350 or some auto trans. What does this have to do with a cub cadet 124 transmission? I asked if anyone had any experience with 2/3 gear getting stuck and the most intelligent response is I dunno probably need to take it apart. Obviously no one else has had this problem so there's probably not a quick common fix so its obvious ill have to take it apart to get it all fixed correctly. So thanks for all the replies but if you don't have somethin constructive to say keep it to yourself.

We've tried to help but you just want to keep it as is and run it until it won't run any more. That's fine it's yours with it it as you wish but don't come and ask for help and ignore the advise given to you. The next step is to take it apart now that you have found broken gears or you can run it as is.

Tried to help by saying to take it apart and figure it out on my own? No problem ill take care of it whenever I want to. Smart comments and irrelevant pictures are no help to me sorry. I don't want to keep it as is. It's be nice to use all 3 speeds that its supposed to have but one tooth chipped off a gear isn't going to keep it from engaging and doesn't mean it will run like that for 10 years or 10 feet. It'll be just fine for now unless I absolutely can't live without 3rd gear. It's not like I have to drive this to work, it's a 40 year old lawn mower...

You seem to think we can see inside the tranny with no pics just going off what you've said. Us helping you requires you to do some things. You make it seem like you want me to come to your house supply all the parts and fix it for you. If you want this fixed the tranny needs to come apart. Time to pick up the wrench and get started. If not that's fine but don't complain that you haven't gotten help or advice you've chosen to refuse the advise and what steps are to fix it.

If you don't want to "leave it as is", then fix it for God's sake! Download a freakin' service manual for the 124 in the tech library, it gives you a step by step on how to take it apart! Don't sit here complaining and whining about how your transmission won't go into gear and then get pissed off at Duke and the rest of us for giving you suggestions and experiences. There have been two of us at least who have given you a brief explanation on how to inspect the gears and how to possibly take it apart. BUT, you clearly shown your lazyness by saying "itl be alright", bringing on the pictures of what happens to a transmission with stripped gears. The only thing I get out of this thread is that you were absolutely proud to tell us that you had a screwed up tranny. So thanks for the info!

Mods, if you feel this is too harsh, delete it...ban me...whatever you gotta do.

I'd fill it with some 30W engine oil and run it. Maybe you'll get lucky and it will free up or maybe it will blow its guts out. At least pull the rear cover off and see if you can fish the broken teeth out or JB weld a magnet to the bottom of the cover and hopefully that will grab some of the junk inside.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
