Default Belt alignment woes

I'm at my wits end with this thing. Its a 149 hydro and I'm trying to get the mower deck working. Here is the trouble: Last year it worked fine and at the end of the season, the belt snapped. Since it was a 25 year old belt it didn't bother me too much. So, I put on a new belt, 78" long which is what I think the old one was (and it is a 44' deck). the new belt was really too tight and could not be adjusted properly and consequently it threw the belt and boogered it up. I tried a 79" belt, adjustment is OK and it doesn't seem to throw it but the belt is wearing fast and the front idler pulleys get hot.

Here is the question: The main deck pulley sits off center on the tractor and this makes the belt ride at an odd angle off of the front idler pulleys. Is this normal? It just doesn't seem right but it worked fine last year so I wonder if I am missing something? The deck really only goes on one way as far as I can see and I have consulted the manual every step of the way. Any ideas?

Yes, that setup is normal. The front mule drive pulleys are supposed to be twisted slightly so that they direct the belt toward the deck spindle. I'd say, when the new belt kicked off, it bent them. Twist them so they run the same direction as the belt.

Are your front pulleys free to spin without a belt? If their stiff or turn hard that would get them warm in a hurry. Your belt and pulleys should be angled to the left as you sitting on the tractor, both about the same. Check to see if the belt rides up on the edge anywhere. And that they are seated down in the pulleys the same.

How about some pictures of the mower deck and especially of the Mule Drive.

Man, im feeling stupid but you guys are immensely helpful. The mule drive i'm using is the same one I used with my tiller and is the only one the PO gave me. It sounds like the mule drive for the mower should be specific for the mower and would explain why I'm having issues. My pulleys are angled straight back, are not bent, and turn freely so it must be the incorrect drive unit? I will try to get some pictures taken today.

Ok- I now know that this is a mule drive for a mower which the p.o. had bent the pulleys straight so they could use it for the tiller. How the mower worked last fall I dont know but explains why it broke the belt. I am going to bend the pulleys back to the original angle and try to find a correct drive unit for my tiller. Thanks for all the help!

I just bought a second mule drive and bent the pulleys for my tiller. Trying to find the correct one for a tiller is hard, easier to just get a mower one and straighten it. IMHO.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
