I think I cleared it up. In looking at various 301 pictures and thanks to the suggestion about the cam gear cover, coupled with a couple of bolts missing from the cam gear cover on this one, it looks like that is where it is supposed to be. Someone must have swapped covers at some point. Looks like I need the correct cover, dipstick, and bolts.

Roland, that is the setup on the one in my 122. I'm wondering now if the spec plate on the latest engine is correct as that block has no provision for the dipstick tube. I'm thinking it is supposed to be in the cam gear cover on this one. Thanks for the help. Now I need to see if it runs as advertised.

According to Roland's post above the dipstick should be on the other side of the block from the cam gear cover. Sometimes those tubes (#14) come loose (they are a friction fit) and will just come off... Check the shoulder of the block see if a PO plugged it up.

This block has never had the oil fill into the block like my original engine. The block is smooth where the fill would go. I am sure now that the fill is supposed to be in the cam cover. The spec plate my be off yet another motor. On a bright note, I wired this one up and it fired right up and ran really well. I'm looking forward to dropping it in. Then I can rebuild the first one and swap them back.
