Default Cub Cadet Super Information Wanted.....

Hi, New to this board but a long time Cub owner. I'm in the market for a Super and wanting some general information on them.
I've researched them some and know the 982 is the first in a long line of Supers on up through the MTD 2086. I'm aware of some of the main problems to look for.
I have found a 2086 with the Kawasaki engine and 48" deck. I would like some input on this tractor. It has 800 hours and is in decent shape with some common plastic problems.
I also found a 2082 which is weathered with 1200 hours, has better plastic and a 60" deck.
I know it's hard to evaluate a Cub without seeing it. Just like some thoughts on these two tractors. Thanks, Tim

Spudder, welcome to OCC. The 2086 has the Kawasaki FD620D motor that is awesome but it has a plastic cam gear that will break in that range of hours if it has not been changed. This will not destoy the engine but it will require a complete tear down. You may want to ask the owner if it has been changed and if it hasn't, use that as a bargaining tool. The 2082 will have a Kohler Magnum that is a good engine also but your getting into that range of hours that it may need worked on also if it wasn't maintained. Without pictures and price it would be hard to say which one is the better buy. I myself would rather have a water cooled motor than an air cooled. Good luck!

Welcome to OCC! You'll love owning a super, no matter what model you end up getting.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
