I had problems with a KT17 coil as well. I changed the coil out, but I also wanted to improve my trouble shooting skills (read just tinker). I found that one side of the tower the copper terminal was corroded so bad that when trying to check it with a meter I could not get a reading, and if I did get a reading it was very erratic.
I took a small brass gun cleaning brush (.224 cal) and a small screwdriver to scrape as much of the hard gunk off as I could... I then used wipe-out a gun cleaning solvent that's used to soak over night and many q-tips and finally got it clean. After that it check perfect and no problems. I'm not sure of any other solvent that would remove the caked on grime, it looked like dried grease. I hope this helps, it may not be a solution to your problem, but it's worth checking.

The towers in mine were clean, I have had the motorcycle coil on for about a week and it seems to be working good. Not sure how to know if it is not working properly compared to the kohler coil I guess if the coil was too hot it would burn up the plugs? Just mowed about four acres and it restarted okay.
