I have mowed with several larger tractors using bush type decks and many smaller mowers including the walk behind and if the grass is too high they all leave an uneven cut. I think the secret is to not let the grass get too high

I get to use all kinds of decks to mow with I think the biggest thing is getting them setup right 1st is not level like most guys will tell you its best to have 1/4in nose drop that way you are not getting any recutting on the back side of blade 2nd is sharp blades as far as which deck I like the best is I like the newer 48 54 gt decks they just power thru the high stuff the other thing is with the gt decks lots of times they are running 20hp +

Thanks for all the comments. They're appreciated.
Remember, it was my neighbor's yard...I don't let my grass get that tall.

If you guys are getting lines with sharp blades and the deck down, I would look at your blades, how ground down are they? Mowing grass for my dads business as a kid, once they were sharpened within a 1/2" or so of the wing, they got retired from residential duty. There just isn't enough blade left to create lift for a nice cut. We always saved those blades for fields or lots where we knew we were going to hit hidden rocks, no loss when you bend one of those blades.
AJ, I had an issue with the 44A on my 1450 last year, the deck would hang 1/2" lower on the right side because the deck hanger bracket on the tractor and rear deck pins had so much slop in them. And since the deck is heavier on the right side it would droop, had to hold it up with a bungee to get a level cut lol. This spring I drilled out all the holes, welded in bushings and replaced worn out pins and it hangs perfect. I have a feeling that your 42 has worn out pins/holes, its just balanced so it hangs level till you hit a side hill and then it tips. |

I did the same thing with my 44C but I just used thick washers and welded them to the upper part of the hole so that they were in the same place that they started from at the factory. It took all of the slop out right away.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
