The hood on a truck keeps forces the airflow over the engine and on out the bottom of the engine bay. Remove the hood and take off on a long trip and air flow goes over the windshield and top of the car. Other things can operate hotter because of the missing hood.
Side covers on the my 1862 Cub have no air flow duties. In fact they hold hot air in around the carb/intake which may be a good idea in cold weather however my Cub is used only to mow grass in 90-115 degree weather. I'm a retired jig builder with hard and soft tooling experience. I have the tools for holes and cutting slots in the plastic side covers. Gives me something to do along with mowing 40 acres of grass and weeds.
