Default Hydro Flush, Drain, and Refill

This is my first Cub Cadet (1872) and I've never worked on a hydro system before. What is the best way to drain, flush, and refill the unit?

If you don't know if the PO has done a good job keeping up on the preventative maintenance, I'd drain the rear from the drain plug, remove filter, remove rear cover, and inspecte/clean the inside of the rear. There could be some sludge build up which can be normal. Make sure you have a rear gasket and approved hyd filter. Use Hytran Ultra or equivalant for fluid.

Not to sound trite, midyearguru, but if you plan to hang on to that 1872 one of the best investments you can make is an owner's manual and possibly a service manual. There's a lot of times when no matter how many forums you belong to that you need an answer and it's a lot quicker to grab the book. BTDT. This doesn't just apply to you - anyone planning to keep one of these beasts for several years or more needs a manual.

I've owned the 1872 for only a short while and have already decided I'll keep it until I die! And now, much to my wife's dismay, I'm beginning to think that these things can multiply like rabbits, as I'm already thinking about buying another one. I have paper manuals on order and have downloaded everything I can find from various sites (Thanks to Matt G. and others for the tips!). Previous owner had no clue about the tractor; he sold it as part of settling his dad's estate.

You'll need to remove the rear cover and clean out the muck from the bottom of the case. Water separates and becomes a muck in hytran, if the PO never did any maintenance it's likely got some water in it. Water will hang out in the axle tubes also, there are drain holes for the tubes but if it's clogged the water and muck will remain so check that too. If you have a quick connect and a hose you can flush your front hydraulics. I also have disconnected each hose at the steering cylinder and at the lift cylinder to flush there also. I have used ATF to flush and then final fill with hytran, atf is cheaper to waste.
