cub cadet 782 engine conversion ?s
I've been looking into the engine conversion kits that small engine warehouse sells for the 782. As of right now mine is powered by an onan which I really don't care for (pricey to repair being a big reason) I'm thinking about doing the 18HP vanguard conversion when the moneys available. I'm curious if anyone here has done it and what you guys opinion is. I've looked on craigslist all the time for a good used engine but haven't seen anything for a descent price. Plus I think having the kit would give me less of a headache.
I mentioned this idea to my girlfriend. She said I should just go buy a new mower. I said fine but youmowing when it dies. Should've seen the look on her face lol

Well if you have an Onan in it now someone has already done a conversion because it should have a Kohler KT in it. The Vanguards are great engines. My guess is you will need to do some electrical wiring and probably some drive shaft work do to the PO mods. Only Cub that I know of that had an Onan in it was the 982.

Yeah that's another thing I'm worried about. From just looking at the engine with the side panels off it doesn't look like anything had been hacked up or changed much. Or so I'm hoping. The onan is starting to burn oil which is why I'm considering this option. I forgot to ask will the 18HP vanguard be able to handle the 50"deck that's on my 782 or should I downsize?

The 782 came out with a 17HP in it, so I don't see why it wouldn't be fine. I don't think the V-twins make as much torque as the old horizontal opposed, but the put 54" decks on the 1863's and they did fine.
