Unhappy PTO Shaft came off my GT3235? What am I looking at?

Hi everyone,

So here is what I'm looking at on top of my GT3235's 54" deck. Can you please help?

I was mowing this evening. After about an hour, I needed to move a branch out of the way, so I stopped the PTO, left the mower running, got off, moved the branch, got back on, and tried to engage the blades. Nothing.

I shut everything down and found I could turn the blades by hand no problem, so nothing was locked up. I thought maybe my seat safety just disengaged, so I hopped on, started up the mower and tried the PTO again.

This time I heard a terrible racket and turned everything off quickly and took a closer look, seeing my PTO shaft had come off, in the pics above.

I'm going to guess (hope) that terrible racket was the turning PTO shaft bouncing around the top of the deck.

So what am I looking at? What's involved with a fix?

If it matters, a few weeks ago, I had a pulley on top of the deck lock up and a repair shop replaced the pulley. This is the second time I've mowed since that repair.

Thanks.

Thanks Rweaver. Is there a schematic online somewhere I can see the bolt and how things fit together?

All, What would cause this? are there other issues going on? I'm debating taking it to the dealer since this is my second issue (first being the deck pulley) in three hours of use. Are these the symptoms of a different problem? Or is this just my unlucky summer?

I bought the mower used from a dealer with 175 hours on it. There are now just over 200 hours on it.

The dealer probably had the shaft off during the repair..... Actually, I'm sure they did. Just take it back. I'm sure they will make it right.

I think how I would do is call the dealer tell him what happened and say if you gime me the bolt and nut I will fix it takes longer to load tractor up than put bolt in just my 2 cents I don't think your unit is bad just had 2 things happen close together one I think the dealer did not tighten that bolt

If I tried to reconnect the PTO shaft myself, do you think the deck would have to be removed? I haven't tried that yet.

It wasn't the dealer who did the recent pulley replacement. Just a local mower service company. Wonder if I should trust him to try and fix this (in case it was his initial mistake)......

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
