Default 1872 Starting Problem when Hot
I have a 1872 that will start and run fine but after it's shut down for 10-15 minutes, it cranks but won't start. I pulled the left plug out and grounded it to the exhaust manifold and didn't get any spark while cranking. The carb and fuel pump are new and don't seem to be the problem. I'm getting fuel but no spark. Does this sound like a bad coil? Would I have to pull the engine to replace the coil? Thanks,Don

The 1872 has a Kohler M-18 in it. The M-18 has a "Magneto Ignition". I am guessing that KH-52-584-02 Module is going bad.

Yes you will need to pull the engine to replace the coil, this is also a good time to clean the crud that it will have on the cooling fins.

How would you know about crud on a 1872!!??



Is there a cause to these failures? Heat? Dirt?

I don't think the dirt bothers a coil too much, but heat will cause a coil to fail prematurely.

I just went through a similar problem with my father's 1862. After running about an hour or two, you would loose spark and have to leave it sit where it stopped for about 3 hours until it cooled down. Like Sam said, the flywheel side of the cooling fins were really plugged up. Cleaning them out and replacing the magneto did the trick. It now will run for hours. I ended up leaving the motor bolted to the mounting plate and removed the motor with the mounting plate as a unit.
