Default LT2180 doesn't start

My Cub Cadet LT2180 (B&S Vanguard 18 V-TWIN) cranks but won't turn over. The engine was making scraping sounds near the front end. I took the air filter, control bracket, covers, muffler, and found the PTO fused to the crank shaft. Removed this to find bearings shot. Replaced this and assembled everything back and it wouldn't turn over. Checked that there is a spark using spark tester, fuel is coming out of fuel pump (tank full), fuel solenoid clicks when key on, and compression 110-130 psi in cylinders (may need further work here since not within 25% of each other). Not sure why it doesn't turn over. Noticed that the yellow wire to the 2 magnitos to ground is less than 1 ohm when key is off and 250k ohms when key is on. Should the resistance to ground be higher when key is turned on? I am wondering if this resistance is draining some of the current to the spark plugs even through I can see a spark. Anyone had experience like this?

Welcome to OCC!

Lets clarify some terms. "Cranking" and "turning over" are the same thing. I believe that you mean that your motor cranks, but won't START.

The yellow wire that runs to the magneto should be OPEN when the key is on. When the key is in the off position, it grounds the mag to kill the spark. If you have fuel to the carb, and you are SURE that the solenoid on the carb is working, try disconnecting the yellow wire to the mag and see if it will start. This will bypass ALL electrical switches. You will have to ground that wire to kill it, or plug it back in. The magneto makes their own power, and only needs that wire to shut it off. The spark should be a nice pretty shade of blue. If it is yellow, the spark is weak. ONLY disconnect this wire to test!! If it works, find the problem and repair it. If still no go, disassemble the carb and see if something is plugging the jet.

Default LT2180 doesn't start

My mistake, when I turn the key the starter rotates the engine but there is no combustion to drive the engine. I disconnected the yellow wire and it still didn't start. Took the cover off the carb for inspection but didn't see anything. Used my air compressor to blow out all the orifices, removed the solenoid and cleaned that out too. Used carb cleaner around all orifices and internal to carb. The gasket was missing, so purchased one, and reassembled. Next checked the wire assembly connecting to the magnetos and found that the wire insulation below the diode anode. Used electrical tape to fix it and now in the process of assembling everything back up. Had to do a lot off dis-assembly in order to get to the magnitoes.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
