Default Gas Tank Repair

I finally decide to fix the gas tank. I rinsed it THOROUGHLY with water. I found 2 pinholes that were leaking. One was near the seam, and the other was near the filter. I fluxed and soldered both areas, then just for fun I had some grey paint left over from another project. I put some electrical tape between the tank and its mount...couldn't hurt.

I am going to make a new front pulley for the engine from steel with a larger diameter to charge better at low speeds. No PTO. Has anyone done this? Advice for size? Can the generator spin too fast?

Also, Is this the stock clutch guard?

Thank you all for your help and input. This is fun!!!

The flip side to putting a larger size pulley would be that it will not turn the engine over as fast when trying to start. Maybe not fast enough to start it. Yes that is a stock clutch guard. Looks like you have a 102 or a 122 by the looks of the headlight cutouts in the grill.

I had a 1966 model 122 and the battery was installed different from yours.

Plus you should get the correct style hold down to reduce the chance of an electrical fire/mishap.

I agree with Kelly. There is really no reason to change it. These machines charge fine at idle. Besides, then you have to center and weld the clutch "basket" to the new pulley, and what if it won't spin fast enough to start? Some mods are good. But sometimes its better to leave well enough alone.

Thanks for the input. I only use my 122 for goofing around. I let my kids, supervised, tinker/drive it. I mainly use it at idle, and it doesn't kick in to charge until just under half throttle. It has a new voltage regulator, charges fine, but not at idle.

Being a machinist with a full shop to my disposal I am looking for a project too.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
