On initial inspection it *looks* like it's wired right. But some of the wiring looks like it's in pretty rough shape. It's possible I have some bad wiring. When I disconnect the F terminal, it stops charging, but still get's pretty hot after a while. I don't know what's normal...After mowing full throttle for about 1/2 hour - 45 minutes it's almost too hot to touch. (That's running it with the F terminal disconnected)

Since you have the V/R in front of you, with the three terminals at the top (or 12 o'clock position) from L to R what are the terminals labeled...???

Roland, looking down at the top of the V/R, with the three terminals across the top, they are "F", "Batt" and "L"

If it were mine and the terminal on the bottom isn't "marked" I would pull the cover off of it and find out if the terminal on the bottom is a ground or if it is connected to something on the inside.
If it is not a ground that wire should go to the solenoid (and then on to the "A" terminal on the S/G).

IF you wiring harness is original and correct, here is how to wire the VR896.
GRY Wire ------> BAT BLU Wire -------> GEN (on the bottom of the V/R) YEL Wire--------> FLD WHT Wire ------> GRD (if applicable) Do Not use the L terminal. Tape or insulate off. The V/R "has to be grounded" so make sure where this mounts it is mounted to clean & bare metal. If in doubt, run an external wire from the mounting feet to the battery negative terminal.

After tracing the wires around, I can confirm that it IS wired correctly. I also don't detect any shorts. After doing a little more research on polarizing the generator, I discovered that I did it wrong when I first connected it. Out of all the instructions out there, I happened to follow the one that said to jumper the + side of the battery to the F terminal on the generator.
This evening, I took everything apart and traced the wires to make sure they were OK, then put it all back together. This time I jumped the + side of the battery to the A terminal of the generator. When I started it it up, I don't get any charge at all. If I ground the F terminal on the generator it starts charging. Currently the V/R is connected properly, grounded well, and I'm getting no charge at all. Did I blow up the V/R by polarizing it wrong the first time? Also, is it possible that the battery is charged enough so the V/R is not calling for a charge? |

Quote:
Wear down the battery a bit and see if it will recharge.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
