Just inherited a 1641 with a serial # 864---. Where is the hydro dipstick and fill hole? Is this one of the "better" MTD made cubs? The book says
Cub Cadet Corp., Cleveland. One more thing--how high a throttle setting to engage PTO? Thanks in advance. |

Hello and welcome to OCC! The hydro dipstick/fill hole should be under the seat. It's no a bad tractor, but not the "best". That particular hydrostat in that tractor wasn't the best one. Otherwise, not a bad machine. You should always engage the PTO at the lowest possible throttle setting that won't kill the engine.

Welcome Retiredguy!
That's a nice machine. I have a 1440 which is its smaller brother and it's the best tractor I've ever owned -- and 19 years old to boot. J-Mech, what is it about the hydrostat (same one in mine) that makes it not one of the best? ccguy 1994-1440 Western MA |

The 1440 and the 1641 used the Hydrogear hydrostat. Tractors made before this series used the Sunstrand units. The Sunstrands have proven themselves a better unit.

I agree with Jonathan on that but the hydrogear pumps are not all that bad. If your using this tractor as a mower you should be fine.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
